Vanessa wouldn’t answer her phone.
I called her eight times that night and she didn’t answer anyone of them. I eventually gave up, going to sleep with worried thoughts running through my mind. How long had she been seeing Jeremy again without me knowing? Why had Jeremy not mentioned it? it seemed like that would be something he would hold over my head right away. What was him game?
There were too many questions and not enough answers.
The next day around noon, Vanessa finally called me back.
“How was homecoming?” I asked right away, not giving her time to say anything else.
“It was fine,” She responded. Why did you call me a hundred times last night?” She sounded almost annoyed and I wondered what had happened last night between her and my cousin.
“Why didn’t you answer any of them?” I countered, just wanting to get answers.
“I turned my phone off during the dance and fell asleep right when I got home. What’s with the third degree?”
I leaned back in my desk chair, breathing out deeply. I was not going to get anything out of her if I kept acting like that. “I’m sorry,” I apologized, trying a different approach. “I heard you went to the dace with Jeremy. Is it true?” I don’t know why I asked her that. Of course it was true. I had seen it with my own eyes. I guess I just wanted to see if she would deny it.
“Where did you hear that?” she asked, sounding nervous now.
Was that why she wouldn’t tell me who she was going with all week? She didn’t want me to know it was Jeremy? It made the most sense, but I couldn’t help feeling hurt, even if it was completely hypocritical of me. “I thought it was over between you two,” I said, keeping my voice steady somehow and ignoring her question.
“It was,” She responded, her voice defensive. “But then he came up to me one day a couple weeks ago and-.”
“A couple weeks ago?” I asked, stunned by how long she had been keeping this from me. “Why didn’t you tell me sooner?”
“Because I knew you would freak out again!” She accused. “I didn’t want to get into another fight with you, so . . .” She paused, taking a deep, tired breath. “I kept it from you.”
I paced around my room, rolling my head from side to side to keep calm. “I don’t want to fight with you,” I said truthfully.
“But you don’t want me going out with Jem either.”
I said nothing proving her point.
“I knew it,” She nearly hissed at me. “Why can’t you just let me be happy? Why is it so important to you that Jem and I don’t date?”
“Because he isn’t the knight in shining armor you think he is!” I yelled, my heart sinking with regret right after the words flew from my mouth.
Vanessa didn’t answer for a long time and I feared that she had hung up on me when she asked, “What do you mean?”
“I-I,” But I didn’t know what to say. I couldn’t tell her that Jeremy was the monster that only I knew him to be. I couldn’t tell her anything. But she wouldn’t keep seeing him. I couldn’t let Jeremy get to her, not again.
