Chapter 4
Somewhere in Mexico
“Is that air I breathe”? The Demon thinks to himself. The earthquake moved a considerable amount of earth in its slow progression south along the San Andreas Fault line. As the earth rolled and pushed and pulled, the tomb that the Demon has been stuck in for thousands of years has moved up and out near the surface of the earth. The capsule that envelopes the tomb has cracked and the Demon now senses air, fresh and sweet, from the outside. This is a sensation he hasn’t tasted in millennia.
He begins to stir, finding the crack and working his claws into the fissure, he is moving his weakened hands back and forth but to little avail. Frustrated and weak, the Demon begins to feel anger towards the one organism that he blames more than anything, his father. “Why father, you may have trapped me for this long, but fear not, I will be free soon! Free to feed, free to gain my rightful place on earth!” Working harder, scratching deeper, pushing out on the capsule, the Demon feels movement of the capsule near the opening. More air flows in, sweet to his nasal passages and lungs. Making his blood boil with a newfound strength and fury, one hard sustained push and the capsule ruptures, he pushes and feels more air rushing in, feeling powerful, the Demon emerges into a world very different than what it was when he was exiled by his father.
The Demon stretches to his 12 foot height, stretching his 6 foot arms, flexing his four inch claws and bouncing on his 5 foot legs. His muscles have atrophied to the point of his not being able to stand for long without dizziness. The Demon smells blood and meat near but cannot yet see at night in order to find the animal he senses.
After a two hour rest, the Demon arises and stumbles toward what he senses as an animal that he may be able to capture. His need of sustenance and blood are becoming overpowering need like no other. His eyes have adjusted enough to be able to make out shapes in the dusk, one of which is a strange animal with a full body, short horns that could inflict damage if well placed and short legs that would not be very fast if they had to run. The Demon finds a barrier made of a hard metal substance that pricks the flesh when he runs his hand over it. The Demon can walk over the barrier easily and is now within grasping distance of the animal. To his astonishment and amusement, the animal lets out a startled sound. For the first time ever in the Demon’s life he hears, “MOO”! “What is this madness”! The Demon exclaims!
He grasps the animal and feels it start to thrash. He feels the heart beat and the blood flowing through its vessels. He feels the strong muscles under the skin flex. All of this is so overpowering that the Demon cannot contain his excitement when he sinks his four inch fangs into the animal, feels its blood flow over his tongue and lips, tastes the saltiness of the blood and feels the animal’s life leave the body he drops to the ground. The Demon has no choice but to howl about his new found specimen to feed upon in this new world.
After the Demon has fed upon three of the animals he has found so readily available, he notices the sun appearing over the horizon. “Father, a new dawn approaches! Once, you said I would never see another dawn again! I say to you Father, HA HA! I am once again alive on the Earth! I will have my reign as I have intended.” Who will stop me now”?
The Demon runs off towards the horizon, howling with excitement and lavishing in his new freedom on Earth. Beware humans, the Demon is back.
