Chapter 21

Dr. Ricardo Rodriguez pulled up in front of Miguel’s home at supper time.  He had traveled the five hour drive in order to bring Miguel all the evidence he discovered to show it to him in person.

Miguel came out to greet his friend, “Ricardo, Mio, why are you here my friend?”  They hugged and turned to see Miguel’s wife, Maria, come out to say hi.  “You are just in time for dinner. Come join us!”  Ricardo declined but in fifteen minutes was washed up and a plate in front of him piled with some great smelling food.  Maria’s cooking was famous in most of this area.

“So, Mio, why do I have the pleasure of your visit?  Have you brought information for me perhaps?”  Miguel inquired.  Ricardo seemed stressed and kept staring off in a trance during supper.

Once they were finished eating and the plates cleared, Miguel finally had his friend alone, “Now tell me what you have found.  Is it about the animal that destroyed my cattle and villagers?  Tell me how I can rid my village of this creature.  Is it as bad as you thought it?  Tell me, Mio, I must know!”

“Slow down my friend, yes, I have information for you.  Yes, it is about the creature we spoke of.  No, I do not know what to make of it, but I feel that my visit to you will reveal many answers to your questions.  Now sit and we will talk.”  Ricardo said thoughtfully.

“First off, the creature is not human.  That we know.  Second, the DNA that I extracted from the saliva is from a creature that lived thousands of years ago and was found in the far areas from here.  The scientist I consulted came across a book that tells of a group of “Demons” that lived in this area and were known for taking human lives to feed upon as well as taking their souls.  They feed twice, once on the body, second on the soul.  This demon was part of a group that was killed off by the Mayans 2000 years ago or so they thought.  What I have found are pieces of a puzzle that extend for thousands of years and over continents.  The movements of the plates and the change in time have possibly revealed an ancient creature that has been released into our world.  What does this mean to us, Mio, simple:  death!”

Miguel took all this in and sat at the table deep in thought about what he was told.  “So, your saying that we are dealing with a creature that is thousands of years old, feeds on humans for their flesh and souls and possibly immortal!  And tell me, Mio, how the fuck do I get rid of this fucking monster before he kills more of my people!”  Miguel shouts.  Veins sticking out of his neck and forehead, sweating and eyes of a madman.  “Is there any way to kill this God-forsaken creature before he finds us all and takes our souls?”

“Miguel, I know you are scared.  I realize that this news is terrifying to you and hard to comprehend but it’s true and it’s an immediate problem that must be solved soon or we will all suffer.”  Ricardo said calmly.  “I have a few options that may help but none are going to work unless we have military input.  Can you call your soldier friend, Hector, and we will rationally discuss our plans and come up with a rational way to kill this creature.  Understand?”

Miguel slowly picked up his phone and called the Armory.  When Hector answered, Miguel stopped his friend’s banter and told him that he needed to come to his house immediately.  Don’t ask questions, just come.  When Miguel placed the phone on the cradle, he turned to Ricardo and told him, “He’s on his way.  We need to sort this out immediately.  I feel that bad things are coming and if we don’t respond quickly, we will all die a most horrible death.”

Just as Miguel finished talking, the knock was heard.  As Miguel headed towards the door to answer it, he knew that this discussion would decide what could possibly be a battle that could end their existence as well as mankind itself.  “God help us’” rang in his head as he opened the door for Hector.
