Chapter 35

Team Campsite

Before Ross could even get out of the truck, Courtney was pulling the door open and Tracy was trying to get in the passenger seat.  The look of terror, mingled with tears and sobbing made Ross’s back go up and he tried to figure out what was going on.

“What the hell is going on?  What happened?” was all he got out before they started screaming and crying louder and telling him to just drive.

“Ross, you have to go, just go, don’t go to the campsite!  We need to go, Meaghan…Missing…tents all tore up…blood…”

“Girls, girls, tell me what’s going on!”  Ross yelled as they were trying to climb on him.

“It’s Meaghan!  She’s missing!  We were busy getting things ready and we heard a short scream and then she was just gone!  We ran to her tent and we saw blood and the tent tore apart just like Emily’s was.  She’s dead isn’t she?  Oh God, Ross!  Help her!”  Tracy and Courtney were sobbing nearly uncontrollably.

Ross put the truck in gear and drove towards the campsite.  As he approached, he saw the destruction the women described.  The two main tents were ripped open and the equipment tent was strewn across the site.  Whatever attacked was majorly pissed and was looking to kill.

Ross got out and reached behind his seat and grabbed the rifle he stashed there and his backpack.  He grabbed the satellite phone out and dialed a number.  “It’s happened again!  This time it’s Meaghan.  The camp is torn up again and she’s missing.  Blood everywhere and the equipment destroyed.”

As Ross hung up, he looked at the two women and they were staring wide-eyed and mouth opened.  “What the hell was that?  Have you had that the whole time?  What the hell is going on Ross?  Explain asshole!”  Courtney yelled at him as he placed the phone back in his bag and hoisted it on his shoulder.

“I’m a scientist just like you two, but I’m also a soldier.  I was sent here to protect the group and do research for my boss.  We have been researching the legend of a species of creature that once inhabited this area when this was all Gondwanaland millions of years ago.  The creature is said to be well over 8 feet tall, long claws, strong body and…..well, possibly immortal.  It is said to be a type of demon that has godly parentage.  It has been encapsulated for thousands of years and has to breed in order to survive.”

“So, you’re here not to study earthquakes, but to study this thing and protect us?  You’ve got to be kidding if you think that we could honestly believe that stupid story.  I can believe you were military, and maybe even a scientist, because you have a professional persona but this other-worldy bullshit is too much to take!” Courtney said skeptically.

“I think your full of shit and are making excuses to make us think differently.  You lying piece of shit!  I fucking trusted you and this is the shit your pulling?  Fuck, fuck, fuck!”  Courtney was still cursing him as he walked over towards the equipment tent to investigate.

Ross found the equipment they were using scattered everywhere, as well as the tent torn up even worse than the first time the monster attacked.  He felt horrible that he was off calling Cameron and Hector and wasn’t there to protect Meaghan.  He guessed the demon took off with her and they would probably find the body or body parts soon enough.  He pulled out the phone again and called Cameron.

“It’s happened again bro.  This time it got Meaghan…yeah, I’m sure it was him.  There’s damage everywhere and blood scattered around…no, I haven’t gotten that far yet.  I’ll go search around here in a bit.  I told them about me and the mission…Well, fuck bro, they needed to fucking know!...I know that, but Jagoe can kiss my ass!  Shit, don’t call his ass yet, at least give me a chance to think and get a plan going….Fuck Hector!  That worthless idiot will get us all killed…OK, I’ll get the girls and head in to the village and find you after I get them somewhere safe and I’ll call you back.”
