Chapter 48

Village Dormitory

Courtney let out a scream and put her arms up to ward off the creature coming at her.  The dog was digging through the trash and was trying to get her to go away.  “You fucking asshole!  Get dog!  Get the hell outta here!”

Tracy and several men came running out of the dormitory to see what happened.  “You okay Courtney”? Tracy yelled and ran to her.

“I’m fine.  That stupid dog just scared the shit out of me.  It was digging through the trash and I guess I startled it as bad as it did me.”

“Well Chica, we have been trying to stop these mongrels around here from digging in our trash, but they are clever putas and we can’t catch them.” Hector said as he came around the corner on crutches and limping.  “These fucking dogs are always digging around and making our village stink.  I have tried to shoot most of them, but some are pets.  These people don’t always feed them so the animals have to find food.”

“I’m fine Hector.  I’m glad to see you up and about.  How are you feeling?” Courtney asked as they headed back towards the door.

“Fine, Chica.  I have a few broken ribs and the stab wounds are sore but I told them I’m better and need to be with my men.  So they let me out with strict instructions.  Fuck their instructions; I’m going to get this fucking thing tomorrow.”  Hector told her as they walked in.

Once again Courtney saw Tracy talking to one of the village men and watched them walk back towards the rooms.  “Well at least Tracy is having some fun.  God, I hope Ross is being careful and not in danger.  Wish he would call me back.”  Courtney had left several messages on his phone and texts but to no avail.  “He must be in radio silence not to attract himself.  Or Gallow has taken it.  Asshole!” Courtney sneered.

Courtney sat down at a table and picked at the food laid out and found she had no appetite.  Maybe she would go take a quick shower and cool off and get the nasty dog smell off before Ross got back.  As she got up to go, Hector called her over to a computer he was using.  “Hey Chica, do you know what this means on the screen?  I haven’t seen one of these and it seems to be blinking something.”

When Courtney approached the screen, her eyes got wide and she tapped a key to enlarge the image.  They had a satellite linked towards a fault line that was west of their location monitoring whether there was any movement of the line as well as a video feed of the area itself in case anyone was bothering their equipment since they were back in town.

Courtney saw a large, dark image moving around by one of the stations near their former camp site.  It was dragging parts of their tents and equipment and throwing it around, as well as crushing the stations it found.  The blinking lights told her that several were malfunctioning because they were destroyed or being destroyed.

Courtney grabbed her phone and tried calling Ross to tell him.  When she got no answer, she tried Cameron’s number that he had given her in case there were problems with the creature, or more importantly, Gallow.

“You got Riggs!”  Cameron answered.

“Cameron, it’s Courtney.  I’m looking at the satellite feeds from our old camp and there is a large shape destroying the camp and equipment.  I’m positive it is the creature!”  Courtney was shouting.

“Courtney…cour…calm down!  I can’t…Court…stop yelling!  I hear you just fine!”  Cameron was trying to tell her in between incoherent sentences.  “Ok, what coordinates are they at?  Look in the bottom corner of the screen and read me the lat and long of the feed please.”
