"Hey, what's going on?" I say with a brusque voice.
His hand still holding mine.
It is warm.
We're in the stairs that lead to the school's entrance.
He gives the impression of being lost, and also nervous.
"I don't know how to say this..." He frees my hand and starts to walk away a bit.
"C'mon fire away."
He looks at me, his blue eyes have never been so deep.
What's so important?
"Lea... I've received a call from Richard and Luis." He begins to speak.
"They're okay?" I ask apprehensive.
"They're okay." he proclaims.
I sigh with relief.
"Your grandmother not."
"What?"
I can't see his smile that can indicate me that he's just kidding, like always.
I can't.
"She's in coma."
I start to breath hardly, feeling every beat of my heart going slowly and slowly.
Tears appear in my face, wetting my cheeks.I cover my mouth with both of my hands.
I observe Lucas.
He's trying to explain me something, but I'm not listening.
I'm only capable of hear the air expanding through my lungs.
"Take me there. Right now." I pronounce, harshly.
"Let's go." He says, leading me to the bus stop.
...
"She will be fine." Lucas tells me while I'm totally away from this world.
I go straight to some nurses that are talking.
The hospital is big.
Bigger than I thought.
Everyone is wearing white, even the floor and walls are of a white colour.
Everything is so... sad.
I see some old people sitting on a wheelchair, moving from site to site hardly.
"Please, where's my grandma?" I ask them.
They gaze at me without a sign of kindness.
"What's her surname?" One of them replay.
"Fitzpatrick."
"I'll guide you." The same person says.
We go through a narrow hall with various doors.
At the end of it, we see that she stops walking.
There are a lot of people inside the room that is technically my grandmother's.
"I'll enter first." She advert us.
I nod.
"Look, nothing bad is going to occur. Have faith." Lucas utters, reassuring me.
"Really... I really want to think in a positive way. But I can't find any."
He touches my cheek with his thumb.
"I'll find a thousand for you, then."
...
Minutes passed, and the nurse finally comes out.
"Fitzpatrick." She calls.
"Yes." I say loudly.
"She woke up." She makes known.
"Yeah?" I shrug.
"I told you Lea!" He says happily.
The nurse keeps on talking.
"The first thing she did... was to disconnect herself from the mechanism that was giving her oxygen." She gazes down, apparently upset.
"That means that..." I don't want to believe it.
"I'm so sorry." She walks away quickly.
I'm not going to accept as true something I haven't seen by myself.
I'm not.
With anger, I enter in the room.
It's full of doctors.
"Get. Out." I tell them.
"Who are..." They ask, astonished.
"It's better you to get out the hell of here." Benjamin covers my back.
As they got apart, I slowly see a figure laid on a small bed.
I get closer and closer, kneeling.
"No... it's not real." I cry out.
Those wrinkles.
That tiny nose.
That hair that I've cut her when I was just 10 years old.
I watch acutely, discovering that her hands are holding some kind of paper.
I take it from her soft hands.
And I suddenly can't help breathing anymore.
It's a picture of us.
I was like seven years old, all smiley and happy with my two tails.
She was holding me in her chest, we were both laughing about something. The photo was taken by my mother.
I shiver.
My grandmother died holding a photograph of us.
"You promised a 'see you later'", I sob. "You promised..."
I sense a kind of pain that kills ke little by little, beginning by ripping my soul.
I cluth her hands, noticing the coldness of them.
My eyes, filled of tears, barely see her factions.
"The last thing I told her was a fucking 'bye'" I murmur, completely gone.
"Lea..." Lucas says.
I ignore him, going toward my grandmother's chest, trying to hear any beat of her heart.
None.
I put my forehead against hers.
And she still smells like old vanilla shampoo.
"I won't leave you.
Don't even think I'll get out of here.
I'll stay until you wake up and give me one of your smiles."I shed loads of tears on her hospital white uniform.
"I love you."
I breath in.
"I'm begging you grannie..."
I swallow.
"Please, wake up."
I close my eyes before everything around me turns black, and the only thought it lasts in my mind is her.
