James Norrington was drunk. His life was in ruins. His wife and unborn child had been missing for a month now; the spell used to find her before was useless. James felt absolutely useless to his wizard crew.
Sirius was the first to find James on the beach that morning. He felt something was wrong with his sister and he came to check. He had searched the room for any clues on who might have taken Kat, but only found a slight magical trace. Sirius was the one who had suggested they take the ship out to sea and search.
James was only alive through Sirius' hope. Sirius just knew his sister was still alive and he made sure James could feel that too. He became first mate on the Little Nemo. Lily came along as the ship's cook. Prongs and Remus came along as deck hands, doing whatever they were ordered to do by James, Lily or Sirius.
The first few days had been okay. James had more hope then. He was sober and the captain of his vessel. Now he was no better than he was before when he was working for Sparrow. Lily had tried to keep the alcohol away from James, but he found it with Kat's wand. Finally she gave in hoping he would drink himself to sleep and give them some peace.
They were experiencing one of those moments when Lily brought up lunch. They had a large table set out on deck where everyone except James were sitting. Lily flicked her wand and the table was set with plates and the food.
"Kat's favorites," Sirius muttered as he pulled the pulled pork toward him.
"I know," Lily said softly. "And I have peanut butter ice cream for dessert."
Remus chuckled a little. "When we get her back I bet she will eat peanut butter ice cream for every meal. There was nothing she loved more..." He trailed off, lost in memories.
"Has anyone tried the location spell recently?" Lily asked.
Sirius held his wand in his hand and muttered; "Point me." The wand spun in the palm of his hand, but it would not stop. "She is still magically protected somehow." He said with a sigh. "I just don't understand why anyone would take her. She has never done anything to make anyone angry."
"People don't always kidnapped out of anger or for revenge." Remus said softly.
"And we are not entirely sure what took her was a human." Lily said. "Selkies can take human form for a little while."
Sirius frowned. "What is a selky?"
Remus sighed. "How did you pass any of your classes?" He asked wearily. "A selky is a creature that looks like a seal or sea lion most of the time, but it can sometimes shed its skin and take human form. Selkies are male and female and sometimes take on human lovers, but they can't live out of the water for long."
"So what would a selky do to Kat?" Prongs asked.
"Possibly take her to an underground cave." Remus replied.
"Please," Sirius said closing his eyes and pushing his plate away. "I don't want to hear any more about Selkies."
Lily was about to change the subject when they heard the slow thud of James' boots upon the stairs. She sighed and fixed the poor man a plate so that he would not have to do so himself.
James looked awful. His hair stuck out at all angles. He had not shaved in a long time and so he had a slight beard. His clothes were dirty and wrinkled and he did smell funny. He looked as Jack had told him once "bloody awful."
"Good afternoon, James." Lily said gently. "I fixed you a plate. Are you hungry. I bet you are." She tried to smile at him, tried to get him to smile back.
James just fell heavily into a deck chair. He took the plate from Lily with a muttered but sincere 'thanks.' His eyes were bloodshot and he could barely keep his eyes open. James was clearly suffering from a tremendous hangover. He ate slowly, not interacting with the rest of his shipmates. When he was finished he rose to return to the captain's cabin.
The cabin was nothing but reminders. Upon their return, Kat had fixed the cabin to look exactly as their cabin had looked when they had been sailing the seas together. The large bay window was currently covered with blue curtains. The enormous circular bed was in front of the window and matched the curtains.
Across from the bed was a large desk covered with charts, maps, a large compass and other sailing items James used. Opposite to the door leading out to the hall was the door to the washroom. The room also contained an large closet and a chest. The ceiling was enchanted to look like the sky outside, just like Kat always liked it.
James kicked his boots off onto the thick blue and gold carpet before crawling back into bed. He hugged the pillows close to him cursing the bright sunny day. James sobbed and moaned Kat's name into the pillow.
"I swear," he sobbed. "If I find you... I swear you will never be farther than arms length."
James lay in his pitiful state for a few moments before rolling over and picking up an onion bottle filled to the brim with rum. He wedged the cork out with his teeth and spat it across the room where it landed somewhere on his desk. James stuck the bottle on his mouth, leaned back and downed half the bottle at once.
He smacked his lips and leaned back against the pillows. He sat there in a stupor for a few minutes more before taking another swig. He smiled a little as his body began to feel warm and tingly. He remembered being able to feel this way without the bottle, but he could not remember how. Deliriously he began to sing a song he remembered his men singing once.
Days and weeks went on in the same manner. Sirius took control of the ship as they continued looking for Kat a month later. The only difference was the singing. James was a very good singer, but he knew very little songs.
The crew of the Little Nemo added ear plugs to their daily ware and allowed James to continue to sing the sometimes inappropriate songs.
