Kate awoke from her nap an hour-or-so later to Josh's gaze. She smiled sheepishly, then worried about her appearance, then forgot about it. She was strangely comfortable around this boy.
"Morning." Josh smiled confidently. "Why is your snake called 'Sock'?"
"Oh," Kate sat up. "Sock is a Dendrelaphis Punctulata. A radioactive explosion hit my city. I was running from it and ducked into the ditch Sock was being birthed in. It appeared the mother was recently evicted, she wouldn't be able to survive the weather otherwise. Unfortunately she died but I saved Sock. She was premature and needed warmth, so I smuggled her here in a sock, hence the name. She's three months old. I think the radiation made her grow faster and stay yellow instead of turning green."
"Your home blew up?" Josh asked, shocked.
"Yeah... In Scotland. It was a small enough city so everything was wiped out..." Kate replied, dropping her head.
"When? Your family?" Josh took her hand and looked deeply at her.
"Two years ago. My family are dead because they didn't believe it would happen." she confessed.
Josh pulled her into a tight hug, holding her against his chest. They both blushed but hid it.
Sock slithered her head inbetween them and yawned.
Kate pulled back, laughing. Josh just smiled at her.
"Mmmmh..."
Kate looked up and Josh got lost in her green and gold speckled eyes. Josh looked down and Kate got lost in his blue and silver speckled eyes.
His fingers brushed Kate's cheekbone, he was soft but present like a snakes tongue. "It's been mere hours but I think I'm falling for you." she breathed.
"I think I'm falling for you too." Josh whispered back, then he leaned in slowly, watched Kate's eyes flutter shut, and he kissed her.
