Chapter 22
About a week passed since Matt’s near death experience, I visited him daily and the others would come along, but it was useless. We would sit there for hours and talk and laugh and chatter about useless meaningless stuff, and he never woke up.
Each day seemed to crawl by; the thought of him lying there unable to breathe by himself was hauntingly scary. Nightmares attacked me at night, I had trouble sleeping, I was so worried as to what would happen to him.
After a long dreary day in school, Tyler and I went to the hospital to visit him, as we approached his room his doctor walked out.
‘’hi doc, is something wrong?’’ Tyler asked quickly.
‘’oh hello Tyler, Sophia,’’ he said warmly.
We both nodded our hellos.
‘’I’ve got some good news for you,’’ he said beaming.
‘’really?’’ I asked perking up immediately.
‘’yes, come on in,’ he said waving us in.
We trooped in and I didn’t know what I was expecting, but the sight of him still seeming to be the same as he was a week ago made my shoulders droop.
‘’oh,’’ I couldn’t help but blurt out, I didn’t know what I was expecting, but I certainly wasn’t expecting to see him still hooked on to a lot of machines. I guess I got my hopes up way too fast and way too high.
‘’the good news is during the middle of the night he actually started to manage to breathe by himself, the machine recorded it, and so now he’s breathing by himself and is hooked onto one less machine,’’ he said cheerfully.
‘’that’s great,’’ Tyler grinned.
‘’yes, it is,’’ the doctor nodded. ‘’now the chances of him waking up are higher and could be quicker,’’
‘’how many days are you estimating?’’ I asked.
‘’that’s really hard to say, but I would say the most would be 3 weeks,’’ he said thoughtfully.
‘’that’s awesome,’’ I beamed. ‘’thank you,’’
‘’you’re welcome,’’ he smiled then exited quietly.
I did a happy dance in the middle of his room and let out a string of excited giggles, Tyler dropped into the chair but he looked a lot more relieved and happy.
‘’I can’t believe it, you’re really getting well,’’ I squealed cupping Matt’s cheeks and giving them a light squeeze.
‘’careful there Soph,’’ Tyler chuckled.
I squealed again and threw myself on Tyler giving him a huge tight hug feeling more relieved than ever.
‘’can’t…breathe,’’ he wheezed out.
‘’oops sorry,’’ I said apologetically as I got off him and straightened my shirt.
‘’guess we should tell the others the good news,’’ he said whipping out his phone.
I nodded as I saw his fingers begin to bounce from letter to letter on his keyboard.
After sitting for another hour or so it was getting late so we decided to leave.
‘’bye Matt, get better soon, you gotta wake up,’’ I said running his locks through my hair. ‘’you hear me bud? You gotta wake up,’’
He continued his even breathing.
‘’get better soon bro,’’ Tyler said slapping him on the shoulder lightly.
