Chapter Six

Tauntng and Jealousy

School the next morning was weird, and I'm not just making things up.

I walked in to see the entire staff dressed in animal costumes and making sounds that matched the theme of the costume. I walked over to my art teacher, Ms. Nelly, who was dressed in a bunny costume. I gave her a confused look, but she simply smiled at me.

"Fif-fif.Fif-fif," she said, trying her hardest to figure out what noise a bunny made. Finally she gave up, and smiled brightly at me. "Hey Midnight, love your jeans." She eyed my imitation - paint splattered jeans. I smiled along with her; I didn't normally wear these out, but today I said, 'eh, what the hell?' "So what is it you want to know?"

"Nothing," I said calmly. "I just want to know what's going on around here."

"Oh," she said it what sounded like surprise. "Well, the principle said that if a student from our school won the district art competition we'd all dress up as forest critters." I giggled when she said 'critters'.

"So who won?" I asked half-heartedly, barely noticing the stares, and groups of murmuring kids around me.

"You didn't check the mail?" she said in an excited tone. "Midnight, you won!"

I stopped cold, along with all the people behind me. The world froze, and I barely realized the astonished people behind me were clapping; Names where racing through my head like crazy, until they stopped on one of the most important people in my life.

Melony Alice Walker, 12/27/67.

What will she think?

"PARTY TIME," Melony cheered as I entered the room. "Congrats girl, you won!" Oh right, I thought, I forgot she's physic.

"So, you're not mad?" I asked in an earnest tone.

"NO!" she said in a credible tone. "I'm happy for you. Sure, we might not be the same school and all, but that doesn't mean we can't see each other." I nodded. She was right; I shouldn't be worried at all.

We were walking down the sidewalk, just a few inches from each other. I could see Melony's profile out of the corner of my eye. She looked like an angel in her white-cotton sun dress, and flower head band. I couldn't help but smile as she babbled on about the barbeque she was throwing in my honor this weekend.

It was only a moment later that I realized someone was behind me.

I hadn't sensed him, or seen him coming, but the moment I heard him call her name I stiffened.

"Oh Melony," he said in a lingering voice. "You don't seem too happy seeing me here. I thought you would, being Night Child's friend and all." I winced as he stated his old nickname he gave to me years ago. "Hopefully we could have some personal time alone to get to know each other." He stepped closer, and I stepped in front of Melony, who was frozen in shock. "Quality time," He took three steps closer and I told Melony to go, but she wouldn't move. "Night Child, you know I wouldn't do anything to hurt her. I would do nothing she wouldn't ask me to. Trust me." He took another step closer, and was standing only a few inches in front of me. "You know I love you."

I froze. He's never said that before. Not when he's like this.

"Trevor," I warned, "do not touch her!"

He put his arm around my waist in a romantic gesture, and pulled me closer to him.

"Night Child," he whispered softly in my ear, "just let me hold her."

"No!" I screamed. He smiled at my obvious jealousy. "You will never touch her, so long as you still want me." I had to restrain my arms. I was pretty sure I was going to punch him if I touched him. He pulled me closer, and looked at me with his intense green eyes.

"Oh, my dear sweet Night Child," he said in a triumphant tone, "finally I see. You're jealous at least." I could feel his lips on my ear start to twitch. He put me down, and looked to Melony with a curious gaze. Then it shifted to a gaze of admiration.

It wasn't something that made me jealous. In fact it made me sort of glad to see him look at her like that; he looked at her as if she was his sister, and she just won a gold medal for doing something good. His gaze turned to me, and the admiration was replaced with love and lust and passion. Trevor was gone.

"Zeke," I said. I put my arms around him, and held him closer to me.

"Midnight," he whispered. I felt his breath on the back of my neck, and shivered. He smiled, and held me closer.

I kissed him, forgetting about Melony for a moment, and sighed. I ended it early, feeling dizzy and wobbly under his restraining arms.

I half-turned my head to see Melony taking in the scene with approving eyes. She smiled, and said, "Sweet. But can I kidnap her for a while. I have something important to show her."

"That's probably a good idea," Zeke said in a warning tone, never taking his eyes off me, "Trevor wants Melony. Protect her from him. He's going to take her, and-" he shuddered "-do what he did to you three years ago. Remember, Night Child?"

I shuddered, and broke our embrace.

"Be sure to keep her away from me," he said gravely. "Be sure he never gets his hands on her. If he does then neither of you will ever be the same. And you-" he pointed to Melony "-use your visions to lie low for a while. You've made Midnight happy, and I want it to stay that way. Hopefully we can all hang out sometime without the craziness."

She nodded, and took my hand.

"Love you Moon Shine," was the last thing I heard from Zeke as he left. His nickname stayed in my mind the rest of the walk to Melony's.
