I remember seeing a magnificent light the day I was born. I'm not sure how I remember, but it was the brightest light I've ever seen. After that, everything was blurry. That is, until I found out about my brother.
My mother left me a picture of him. She told me that he was stolen from her before I was born. Mother hadn't seen him since. I still worry for Mother, even if she is gone. I miss her terribly. Thankfully, I have Hana with me. Mother found Hana as an egg and gave her to me when I was born.
"Here you are, Sayuri. This is your guardian. She hasn't hatched yet, but she will when the time is right. She'll take care of you, therefore you must do the same and take care of her, as well." Mother said.
Then one day, Mother wasn't there anymore. That same day, Hana hatched from her egg. I held onto her egg, tears streaming down my cheeks. The very moment my first tear fell, the egg began to crack. Out popped a beautiful, precious pink cat. I quickly took her into my tiny, fragile arms. This little kitten is mine, my new friend. I stroked her soft pink fur. All of a sudden, tiny wings spread out from her soft, pink fur. "Why are you crying?" The little kitten meowed. "I can't find my mother anywhere..." I stuttered. "Oh. What's your name?" She meowed. "Oh-- me, yes um, I'm Sayuri." I stammered. "What a pretty name! I wish I had one." The kitten sighed. "Hmm... How about... Naomi?" I suggested. She shook her head. "Hikari?" Another shake. "What about.... Hana?" "Aye! I love that name!" She squealed. "Hana it is then." I smiled. Even though Mother is gone, at least I have Hana now.
"Do you have any family?" Hana looked at me. "No, not anymore. Mother said I had a brother, but he disappeared years ago." I sighed. "In that case, I'll be your new family!" She meowed cheerfully. "Really?" I stared at her, a bit shocked. "Really, I will!" She smiled. I squeezed her tightly. "Oh, Hana! I'm so glad that I have family now!" "Uh-- Sayuri-- I-- can't breathe--" She coughed. "Oh, sorry! My bad!" I set her down gently. "Mrrow! I'm hungry. Do you have any fish?" Hana meowed grumpily. "No, sorry. We could go into town to get some, though." I suggested. "Aye!" She meowed.
I grabbed my satchel off the kitchen table, signaling to Hana to come outside. I grabbed a biscuit from our only food cabinet and stuffed it into my satchel. "Hana, come on! You won't get any fish if you stay here!" I yelled. I quickly opened the door and stepped outside, Hana rushing out behind me. "Aye! I'm here!" She huffed. We set out on our way to town.
When we arrived in town, people began to stare at Hana. "Here, Hana." I whispered. She looked at me and nodded. I quietly tucked her into my satchel and kept walking. Everything is so tall! I wish I was tall so that I could actually see where the fish stand is! "Here, I'll boost you up!" Hana smiled. She flew out of my satchel, grasping onto my dress. I felt my feet lift off the ground. "Wait! Hana, what if people can see!" I shuttered, holding my dress down. "Stop squirming or I'll--" Hana began. I screamed as I plummeted down to the ground. "Hana!!!!!" I screamed. I closed my eyes, bracing myself for impact. I waited. "You can open your eyes now." She meowed. I opened my eyes, the ground far below. I sighed in relief. "So, now can you see the fish stand?" "Yeah." I squeaked. "It's over there, just past the clock tower." I muttered. As we began to drop, I realized that this was Hana's first time flying this high. "Uhh, Hana? Do you actually know how to-- AHH!" I screamed as we crash landed into a bush, right beside the fish stand. "I'll work on it.. Heh." She blushed.
"Why hello there, young one. What are you doing out here all alone?" The man at the fish stand asked. "Oh, I'm not here alone. I have Hana with me!" I smiled. "Alrighty then. What can I get for you?" He smiled back at me. An elderly man, perhaps in his 80's, if I recall. "One sardine, please!" I requested. "Here you are. It's on the house." He handed me the tiny fish, smiling. "Thank you!" I winked. "Enjoy, Hana!" I tossed her the fish. "Shank wuu!" She quickly gobbled it down. I skipped off, down the street, turning corners, all the way to the fountain in the middle of town.
"Mother used to take me here every week. She said it was Onii-chan's favorite place. The sun always shines down and makes the water sparkle." I smiled, looking down at the glistening water. "Mother named me after the tiny lilies that grow near the fountain." I sighed, remembering all of the days I had spent with Mother. "Aye! What's that?" Hana pointed to a flag with a strange emblem on it. "Oh, that's a guild. Mother used to be in one! She was an amazing wizard! She told me that before she had Onii-chan, she was the top wizard in her guild! She met my Papa in a guild, too. I don't remember the name, but Mother said she took Onii-chan back to the guild with her every time she would visit town with him. Oh, if only I could visit that guild! I might be able to find Papa or Onii-chan again." I sighed. "Why don't we go see if that guild is the one your mother spoke of? It'll be worth a try!" Hana suggested. "Okay!" I smiled. I stood up, looking at the fountain. I hope we find you, Onii-chan. Papa. We headed over towards the guild. My legs began to tremble.
I stared at the door, unaware of what was about to happen.
