29 - the end

"I really hate that it had to end like this," he said, looking at Ashton.

The monitors hooked up to the real Michael began to beep shrill and constant, and a flat line began to cross the screen.

"Now you'll lose both of us.", he said as he touched Michael's cheek, and disappeared.

"No!!", Luke screamed. "What happened? What did you do?!", Luke shouted frantically looking at Ashton. Ashton looked back, horrified.

"Nurse! Help!!", Luke screamed, just as a team of nurses came running into the room with all kinds of equipment.

This was his worst nightmare.

Luke backed away, into the corner with tears streaming down his face. Calum was crying, saying Ashton's name. But he just stood there, staring, as if he was somewhere else. The nurses worked rapidly, Michael's monitor was going crazy.

Ashton stood there watching, waiting. Somewhere off in the distance he heard Calum screaming his name and Luke's loud sobs, and beeping monitors and nurses and doctors giving out orders. But he didn't move. He couldn't.

Luke ran over to the bedside now, squeezing between the medical professionals crowded around Michael's body. At this point, he didn't think they could help. It was all up to Michael.

Luke crouched down and grabbed one of his hands, still warm with life. "Please Mikey, please wake up.. Wake up for me. Please. I can't do this without you...", he whispered, his face stained with tears.

"We're losing him!", a nurse shouted, as someone pulled him away from Michael's bedside.

"No no no," Luke sobbed, covering his face with his hands. Everything hurt. His chest hurt, like his heart was being ripped out of it. He hurt like he was dying too.

This was the moment that Luke feared the most. The kind of awful moment you only see in movies, that you can't imagine ever happening to yourself. And now, it was happening to him.

He stood beside Ashton who was still frozen with fear. There was chaos everywhere. A flat line began to cross the screen. All hope was lost...

And then Michael woke up.
