Chapter 1 – Kate
Positive.
The word flashed up at me as I peered down onto the advanced piece of technology. I closed my eyes and just lay down on the cold bathroom floor, the cold tile oddly comforting against my body. Who knows how much time passed before I finally sat up? I am only 16 and I just finished my GCSE's.
I groaned as I realised the complications involved. Firstly there was mum. I bit my lip and ran my agitated hands through my hair. She had me when she was 16 as well and God knows where my father is. He wasn’t much of a dad in the first place, more of a sperm donor due to our non-existent relationship. Mum told him that she was pregnant and he left. Just like that.
All that I could think of right now was her drilling into my head not to do what she did. She always told me she would fork out the money for my education. She was always telling me to focus on my studies. I can remember her telling me not to drink and have drugs just to be part of the crowd. The one thing she had instilled into my head as soon as I was old enough to understand was not to fall pregnant at a young age.
I sighed as the memories swirled around my head. I picked up the damned pregnancy test one more time, glancing to see if I was mistaken, but that sort of thing only happened in the movies. The green plus flashed bright at me, mocking me. I wrapped it in tissue and binned it before exiting the bathroom. I needed to think through this situation, but it could wait for later because I was exhausted.
Flipping the lights off, I felt the way to my bed before easing under the covers and letting the cold sheets creep into my body. I rolled over in bed with my eyes half closed when it suddenly hit me. The realisation had me bolting up on my bed. I was pregnant. That meant I had a baby in me. An actual baby that I had made and had a part of me inside. Emotion suddenly took over me as I rubbed my tummy. I sniffed and smiled trying not to worry about when I'd tell my mum or how I will fend for my baby. I thought firmly to myself not to think of it right now, as I settled down under the duvet in the warmth and comfort of the bed.
A few hours later I awoke fully, got out of bed and turned to open the curtains. As I was turning, the sight of my pillow stopped me abruptly. On my pillow there was one thick strand of my hair. As I touched my head, I couldn't notice anything different and it didn't seem as if it had even come out of my head. I puzzled over this for a minute before realising it was most probably the emotional turmoil and stress I was going through at the moment. Shaking my head I carried on with my business, the thought leaving my head as fast as it had entered.
My eyes winced at the sudden brightness that entered in as I opened the curtains. I quickly showered and chucked on anything I could to find to wear. I turned to the mirror to comb my hair when I lowered my hand and just stared; at the girl that was going to become a mother in less than 7 months. Her pale face outlined worry and stress with her piercing blue eyes tight around the corners. Concentrating on the eyes, you could see pools and pools of icy blue. Her hair was light brown, almost even a dark blonde. It was shoulder length and in the light it had a reddish tint. It may be weird, but I guess that's what made her. She was quite tall in height, a little taller than average. She smiled and rubbed her stomach softly.
I shook my head and got back to reality. I brushed my hair, tied it up, put my slippers on and made way to the stairs. I stretched and yawned loudly while my neck clicked. I hunched my shoulders upwards and then backwards, trying to relieve the stress. I was about to go down the stairs when I heard soft sobs. I looked around to see if I imagined it but I could hear crying, coming from my mother's room. I walked over to her room and silently slipped through. My mum was facing the other way, but I could see her shoulders shaking so I knew she was crying.
