Chapter 3 - Kate

Dialling, dialling and dialling. Over the past 2 days I've been dialling one number and he still hasn’t picked up. Yes that’s right, I'm talking about Ryan. The father of my child. Obviously not being prepared in raising a child or knowing any information about childcare, in any spare time that I had I was researching. I’ve learnt so much in such a short time span! I mean, did you know that when you are dilated you can take an epidural, which is an anesthetic to produce loss of sensation below the waist. So basically it numbs your stomach and gives you effective pain relief! I chuckled as I recalled telling my mother.

"If only they had that around when I was pregnant with you. I was in labour for 16 hours!" she’d yelled.

My chuckle faded as I recalled mum going around the house texting her precious Phil. This ‘Phil’ was getting more attention than me! I am happy that mum is happy but she could introduce me or even let me feel more involved in her life! Yes I know I’m being slightly overdramatic but I’m pregnant and my hormones are left, right and centre. Yes, I will use the excuse of being pregnant to explain a lot of things!

Sighing, I put my mind to the task that I was doing before my thoughts drifted off. Knowing that I will not get a response, I grabbed my phone nonetheless and called Ryan. I am not even joking, this is probably the 57th time I have rung his number. Mum won’t be happy when she sees my phone bill! I was preparing to cut the phone in a few rings because when someone misses the first 5 rings, it’s pretty obvious they won’t pick up the phone! But to my absolute surprise, the ringing stopped and he picked up the phone!

"Ryan!" I said breathlessly.

"What is it with all of the calls? I think you made it quite obvious that you wanted to forget what happened!" He retorted, sounding pissed off.

"Look I really need to talk to you and it’s urgent, so meet me at starbucks at 7 okay?" I said, cutting the phone off before he complained. I dashed around to find the straighteners to straighten my hair. I knew that I shouldn’t get hopeful because he didn’t seem like the type of guy that would stick around for a baby. After I’d told him that we should forget what happened he looked kind of shocked but then he had pasted on his trademark smirk. He said, and I quote “What makes you think you were special enough to get my attention anyway? I was drunk, it was a mistake. I’m having fun screwing around for the moment.” I couldn’t believe that he would blow off our encounter like that, using such harsh words. He made me feel worthless, like an easy slut that just added to his list of how many girls he had ‘scored’. When I had told him it looked like he was going to protest and I had a tiny bit of me thinking that he might be interested in me. However, that thought was crushed when he blew me off with the cold words.

I thought back to when I had first met him.

It was, as you have probably guessed, a one night stand at a party. Real classy! It was early in the Easter break, Lucy, my best friend, had been invited to a party and she had been badgering me all week as to if I would go with her. I was a bit hesitant at first because I’m not the type that goes to parties because I would be much more content sitting at home eating ice-cream and watching TV. After consistent persuasion from Lucy, I decided that I would go. She said that we had finished most of our exams and that I should loosen up a bit. She also said it wasn’t like I was going to go raging drunk and get in bed with a hobo on the streets. Yeah, she’s pretty dramatic.

So back to that night; it was the first time that I had gone to a big party. I got dressed in this tight red strapless dress that ended mid-thigh. It had quite a low neck but Lucy assured me it wasn’t slutty at all.

Lucy wore a similar dress in black, except hers had a lower neck and it was cut quite short. It didn’t really leave much to the imagination. As her best friend I told her and she just laughed in response.
