Chapter Nine: I'd risk getting fired for you-

With wide eyes I turned back around slowly just in case I ended up making a floorboard creak and gave away my position. I glared at Melissa, completely stunned. Out of everyone in this entire town it had to be him? Hundreds of teenagers desperate to make a quick buck just doing a few runs around town dropping off pizzas from the local takeaway and it had to be him. Why! Why? Why god did you make it be him? Knowing mine and Melissa's luck, I guess we shouldn't have been too surprised.

“What do we do?” I whispered, rocking Charlie and hoping he didn't suddenly decide to scream his lungs out and cry. There would be no way to avoid the pizza guy then and pretend there was no one home.

Liss still looked full of panic and found it hard to speak, she simply shrugged her shoulders. “I don't know, but I want that pizza!”

    “Then answer the door.”

“I don't want him to know I live here!”

There were three more knocks on the door, louder this time. The dog, Ears, came charging out from the kitchen, skidding across the floorboards to bark at the door, making Charlie laugh. I hushed him quickly and chased the spaniel back into the kitchen, its little legs tripping over its very long ears.

“So what are you thinking?” I asked Liss as I tip-toed my way back. “Bungee jumping out the upstairs window, grabbing the pizza and then you pull me back up? We can just post the money through the letterbox.”

Melissa gave me a deadpan look, running a hand through either side of her frizzing hair.

“I have a better idea. You just answer the door, hand Charlie over.” Liss held her hands open wide and gestured to the adorable giggling bundle in my arms. I didn't want to let him go, he was my protection, my shield against Melissa's horrible idea. I clung onto him for a few seconds longer before eventually handed him over to her before she cried kidnapper!

There were more knocks and Ears knew better this time round not to bark again.

“Pizza delivery!” A voice called from the other side of the door, a little too high-pitched to be male. “Last chance before I leave.”

“Go on Naomi, there's someone at the door.” Liss said, shoving me forward before running with Charlie bouncing in her arms to go and hide with Ears in the kitchen.

That was when it dawned on me that I was still in costume. I reached a hand up to confirm the wig was still on my head, and the make-up still coloured my face. My whole demeanor changed, as if I had just hidden my true identity underneath an invisibility cloak. Ah-hah. Piece of cake. I stood up straighter and readied myself, clearing my throat and replacing the distasteful frown with a sultry smile.

I swung the door open and leaned my hip against the door frame. At first the pizza boy didn't even look up, he was rustling around in his bag pulling two pizza boxes out and handing them out to me. I waited a moment but he still didn't look up, so I resulted to making a small noise in the back of my throat. That seemed to get his attention.

His mouth fell open instantly, my confidence wavered slightly. Was that a good reaction or bad? I wasn't quite sure but I made sure to keep the smile on my face.

“Something wrong?” I asked him, my voice so sickly sweet I could almost taste honey on my tongue.

“N-n-no,” he stuttered most intelligibly. He pulled himself together and smiled at me. My stomach churned for a moment when I noticed that his smile wasn't normal. There was an edge to it, a smarmy, brash edge that made me uneasy. “No. Nothing's wrong.”
