Chapter Twenty-Seven: Hey Liam? What's That On Your Shoulder?

Hauling my book bag over my shoulder, I got ready to leave school. Another day done and dusted and out of the way. I sighed under my breath as I stood up from the desk and pushed the chair under, following the last stragglers out of the classroom. Just as I was leaving the teacher felt the need to call after me, “I expect to see a better performance within your work tomorrow, Shayenne.” and I felt the need to ignore him and pretend I hadn't heard him.

I was tired damnit! Why couldn't they see that? I mean hell, weren't the purple bruises under my eyes enough evidence? Boys! They were ruling my life, I couldn't wait until after the date with Nate and then it would be all over. Oh, but wait. I said I'd go to that party with Ki, that was practically a date as well. Okay, so, two more dates and then I was free. Free from the stress that was the opposite gender. After this school year I will never look at a boy again, I guarantee you. I'll be keeping my distance until I'm in my mid-thirties and thinking about babies. I'd had enough contact with the other half for the rest of my teenage life.

At least my hard work was being rewarded tonight, for being so good at my duty of being a best friend Melissa was going to treat me by taking me to the movies. I was actually looking forward to it.

“Shay!” Came the screaming of my name which could only come from one person. “Shay, oh my god! Shay!”

I turned around just in time to catch Melissa in my arms before she full on ran into me and sent us both crashing to the floor. She was panicked, even more than usual, and really twitchy.

“What now?” I grumbled with a roll of my eyes.

“He's after me!” She whispered harshly, her eyes darting up and down the corridor at the many different faces that passed us as they were leaving school, like we were meant to be doing. “He's gonna get me!”

“Who? Who's after you? You didn't knock Mr. Harod's toupee off in front of everyone again, did you?”

“No! Mark. Mark's after me.” I blinked and she clutched my shoulders tighter. “You know, Beerbelly Mark.”

“Oh,” I said when it dawned on me, then I was paranoid too, peering behind her. “How far behind you is he?”

“I don't know. I just ran when I saw him looking at me. Let's get out of here before he finds us.”

I nodded my head as Liss dragged me by my arm and pulled me down the hallway. I could see the front doors in sight, the beaming streams of light of the sun lighting it up as if it were the gateway to heaven. Then a silhouette formed, a round figure with curly hair that was red within the light. It was too late to turn back now, for a big guy he was fast. I didn't even see him coming at us.

Melissa and I came to a halt, and Liss began to push at my arm so she could hide subtly behind me.

“Hello, ladies.” He grinned wide, thinking his smile would blind us. He was staring at Melissa and wasn't paying much attention to me. Why would he? He knew Liss more than me, to him I was just that strange girl who'd been spying on him in the boys changing room.

    “Hi Mark.” Melissa squeaked politely.

    “Yeah, hi.” I added.

His beady eyes suddenly looked at me, and after a few seconds he recognised me. “I don't believe we've met officially. Last time I saw you was in the locker room. You were trying watch me in the shower, and then you screamed and ran away like a fan-girl.”
