Chapter Twenty-Three: Cross my heart and hope to die
“You gonna eat that?” I asked Melissa, not even giving her a chance to answer me before I snatched the half eaten chicken sandwich from her tray and began munching rabidly.
“No, you go ahead. Clearly eating your own lunch and then finishing Adam's pasta of wasn't enough for you. Greedy mare.”
“I'm starving!” I tried to say through a mouthful of bread but I didn't think either of them understood me, and just stared.
“Watching you eat puts me off my food anyway. You're like a vulture when you eat. Ergh.”
I grinned wide showing her my teeth and sticking my tongue out to display the mashed up food. Melissa groaned and turned away from me, her eyes gazing out across the school field to a group of guys playing cricket. It was lovely and sunny and so we'd decided to eat our dinner outside on one of the benches.
We had a great view. With the weather being so nice, there was hardly a boy in sight that actually had a shirt on, they were either tucked into the back of their trousers or tossed on the floor. Dinner and a show. I liked it, and I was sure Liss and Adam appreciated it as well.“Oh my giddy aunt!” Adam suddenly exclaimed and I nearly choked on the last of my sandwich thinking he was about to pass out in Melissa's lap.
“What? What's wrong?” Liss and I shouted, reaching out to him.
“Oh it cannot be true.” He cried dramatically, and I rolled my eyes. Here I was thinking there was something actually wrong with him, when it was probably something trivial like a broken nail. “Look over there. Do you see?”
I followed his pointing finger behind me to one of the school building's to see a group of people loitering outside the front doors, Darren being one of the boys as the centre of attention. No surprise there then. Except today Darren wore a hat that covered most of his face, leaving only his smile to be admired. When he tilted his head up slightly I could see he was wearing sunglasses an all. Slowly sinking back into my seat in guilt, I kept quiet.
“How can the sun be shining why our sex-god Darren Nevis is hiding his face. Do you think he's actually grown a zit or a giant spot? Is that what he's hiding? He's one of us after all, who'd have thought.”
As if on cue Melissa burst out into laughter and started giving me knowing glances, it wasn't long before Adam caught on and frowned at me.
“There's something you two know that I don't, isn't there? Right, come on. Spill the beans.”
“Yeah, Shay. Do spill the beans. Tell Adam what you did to Darren.”
I shook my head, feigning dumb. “I don't know what you're talking about.”
“She sprayed Darren in the eyes with pepper spray!” And with that Liss fell into her fit of giggles once more, but Adam did not find it funny. It was like I'd just slap him across the face with a wet fish, and for a moment I contemplated running for my life.
“You did what?” He outraged.
I opened my mouth to defend myself but it was like I was trapped in court in front of a merciless judge who was about ready to condemn me to a life-sentence of imprisonment.
