My 'apartment' is crap. I thought that before I closed my eyes last night, and I still think that at 5:15 in the morning. The agency defiantly didn't bust open their wallets for me or anyone. It was okay, though. I'm still better off than most.
I got dressed and loaded. For breakfast I had a protein bar and glass of water. Besides the fact that I'm a special agent, my life was fairly simple. I didn't need more than the basics, which worked to my advantage.
I tied my combat boots up, and set out for Taylor's apartment. Two guards were waiting outside.
"Good morning." One said.
"Mornin'." I replied shortly.
They were sipping coffee. I didn't drink it much, but when I did I drank it black. My phone buzzed and I looked down at the screen. It was a text from Taylor.
"Come inside"
I looked up to check for a window she can see me out of. There were a few, I realized, that she could see the street from.
"Was that Ms. Swift?" The bald guy asked.
"Yes." I said and got out my special key to open the door.
"Hey, kid, just give her a chance." He said before I closed the door behind me.
I gritted my teeth at the 'kid' part, but looked over my shoulder.
"I'm just not a people person."
He nodded and I closed the door the rest of the way. I used my key to get through the lobby like area and heard talking. I was standing in a decorated foyer. It gave off an expensive vibe immediately.
"I think she's here." I heard what sounded like Taylor's voice whisper.
Adam came into the foyer. He must have spent the night.
"Alex, good morning! Come on in." He said motioning me to follow him.
Adam took me into the kitchen where Taylor was standing at the stove. Didn't she have people for that?
"Hey! Good morning!" Taylor gave me a bright smile.
"Good morning." I said dully without meaning for it to sound like that. I guess it was just natural.
"You can sit at the bar or at the table. It's up to you." Taylor said pointing at the two locations.
"I'd rather stand."
"Please, it makes me feel bad when people stand around." Taylor said in a pleading tone.
Adam mouthed a "please" and I found myself thinking about what the security guard just said to me. I silently slipped into a stool at the end of the bar. This earned a smile from both of them.
"Did you get settled in okay yesterday?" Taylor asked.
"Yeah, I guess." I responded.
"Did you decorate any or was it an already put together kind of thing?"
"It was already set up."
"Oh, well that's good. It saves you the hassle, right?"
"I guess so."
She came towards me with a few plates in her hands and set them in front of me.
"Sorry, I wasn't sure what you would like, so I made a couple different things." She said.
"I, um, already ate."
"Oh." Taylor said disappointed.
"What did you have?" Adam asked.
"A protein bar."
"No. That's not gonna cut it. Have some real breakfast, please." He said in a stern tone.
I stared at him and he stared right back.
"Fine." I bit out. This was agitating me. Next time, I'm not coming inside.
"What would you like to drink? Milk, orange juice, tea..." Taylor listed off.
"Water, please."
"How about milk?"
"I hate milk." I said. It was the truth, I really hated it.
"Orange juice?"
"Uh, sure." Why can't I just have water?
Adam got the juice out of the fridge and poured some in a fancy looking glass. Things that fragile always made me nervous. Taylor and Adam sat their plates down on the counter top and sat opposite of me.
I had more than a few different foods. There was a plate of toast, a plate of pancakes, and a plate of eggs, sausage, bacon, hash browns, and fresh strawberries. I've never had a breakfast like this before. When I tried to reach back in my mind an recall a memory similar to this I came up with none.
"Alex, are you okay, babe?" Taylor asked.
I looked up and met her concerned blue eyes.
"Yes, thank you for making me breakfast. That was really nice of you."
"You're welcome!" I could tell she was happy with my reaction.
I ate some hash browns, bacon, pancakes, and strawberries. It was very filling.
When I was finished I took my plate to the sink and began to wash it.
"Oh, Alex, you don't have to do that. Just leave it in the sink and the house keeper will wash it while we are out." Taylor said.
I was torn. Never before did I have people to do things for me. It seemed rude for me to leave dirty dishes in someone's sink. Then again, the house keeper earned money by completing the task of washing dirty dishes. I set the plates in the sink after scraping off the left over food into the trash can.
After I was done with that I was unsure of what to do next. Do I sit back down or go outside? Taylor and Adam were done eating. I checked my phone for the time to see that it read 6:57. Taylor's phone buzzed.
"The car is here." She announced.
"I'll walk you out." Adam told her.
I walked in front of them. All of a sudden, I felt something brush against my leg. I looked down and saw a furry, white cat.
"Aw, Olivia wants to say hi." Taylor smiled down at her pet.
Adam scooped the feline up and pet her head.
"We're gonna hang out today!" He told the cat. I felt my lips curl up slightly at the fact a big guy like Adam was talking to a cat. He set the cat down and we made our way to the car. Only a few people were gathered around. They were easy to manage. I got Taylor to the car safely. When I closed the door I felt resistance. Taylor's hand grasped my wrist gently.
"Get in." She said pulling on my arm.
Adam lightly pushed me from behind to get me to move forward. Once I was fully in the luxurious car, Adam shut the door.
"Good morning, John!" Taylor told her driver.
"Good morning, Taylor!" He called back cheerfully.
"This is Alex, my new body guard."
"Well!" He laughed slightly, "pleasure to meet you young lady!"
The car began to move and we were soon moving through traffic. So, this was what morning time in New York looked like. It was busy and clustered, but also kind of exciting. Not the kind of excitement I was used to. More of a warm kind of excitement instead. I kind of liked it.
"Welcome to New York." Taylor said with a smile as she saw me engrossed in the view outside my window. I gave her a small smile back and enjoyed the relaxing car ride.
