Parker.
It was Parker.
He was the last person on the face of the earth I wanted to talk to. With a sigh, I picked up the phone.
"Yes Parker?" I sassed.
"Wow okay nice to talk to you too Mabel."
"What is it?" I sighed.
"I heard you were home and to see how you were-" he began before I cut him off snapping, "I'm fine." He then continued, "-and I'm having a party tomorrow night that you should come to"
"I can't" I replied simply.
"Please Mabel. I miss you." He pleaded.
"I can't. I have plans with Josh."
"Wait. JOSH?! The druggie who left you for a month while you grew more and more depressed?"
"That's not how it- hold on" I said before excusing myself from the room. I continued with a sigh, "Look he saved my life. We had a misunderstanding, but I love him so please just go."
"So what about us" he prodded.
"There is no 'us'" I retorted. He attempted to protest, but I shot him down.
"Fine. But come as a friend, bring the druggie, just tell him to leave the drugs at home" he offered.
I fumed, "Stop calling him that."
"Fine. Bring Josh. I miss you."
"Look. I'll talk to him I just. I don't think it's a good idea for me to be in that environment" I explained.
"Just call me back and let me know. Lov- Bye Mabel" he finished before hanging up.
Josh agreed it might not be wise, but he also said I should see Parker. We had decided we would go, maybe just a little while, but we had rules: no drinking, no drugs, and we had to stay together. Easy enough right?
Josh and I decided that to get ready we should go shopping, so after a quick makeout session we left for the mall. It was crowded and after a few minutes of walking I had gotten pretty overwhelmed so we ducked inside a quiet boutique. There were fabrics and dresses lining the walls in an assortment of colors.
"Hello welcome to one of a kind boutique, how can I be of assistance?" a clerk asked.
"My girlfriend and I are going to a party tomorrow night and I am buying her a dress to wear, where can we find those?" he smiled.
"The dresses are along these two walls and this rack here, all dresses are one of a kind, so each style is offered in only the size shown. We can tailor a dress for a small fee if needed though." She explained pointing to the dresses. Josh kissed my forehead and smiled, "a one of a kind dress for a one of a kind girl."
"Get out of here you cheese factory" I laughed, hitting him with my purse. I was laughing and having a great time. I had forgotten how it felt to laugh, to smile, to feel complete. Piece by piece, Josh was making me whole again.
I grabbed a handful of dresses from the racks, some serious, some not. I started with a poofy, red, silk gown with cap sleeves. When I walked out Josh could barely contain his laughter. I twirled around and fell into a curtsy.
"That is- wow" he cried out in laughter. We continued like this or the next twenty or so minutes, probably irritating the other couple who had entered ten minutes prior. Eventually, I tried on a blue, lace, skater dress. It fit me wonderfully and surprisingly, made me feel good. The dress covered my thighs and the waistline sat in just the right location as to make me appear a lot thinner than I was. Josh loved it, and went over to the one-of-a-kind jewelry trays, where he picked out a beautiful pair of blue earrings.
"You look stunning" he said as I returned to the changing room to put my clothes back on. As we checked out, I also heard him whisper to himself,"I love you."
