“Does it match his M.O.?” Cosette lifted the tarp, making sure not to shift the paper rulers placed next to the doll. Joly kneeled down next to the body and pointed out a few special features.

“Brunette, six year old girl; raped; left with a special customized look-alike American Girl doll, slashed all over, also been abused-and for a long time too.” Joly looked up at Enjolras, who was inspecting the body from above. He lifted the girls’ eyelids, then closed them as if she were sleeping and pulled the tarp back over her. “She’s been dead for about half and hour.”

“We could’ve saved her,” Enjolras raised his voice.

“There was nothing we could do, she was already on her third day.” Cosette got back on her feet.

“I could’ve spent the night at the office,”

“Enjolras, there-”

“I could have saved her,” Enjolras turned to look Cosette in the eyes, “Now I’ll be the one talking to the parents.” he walked away to his car, but turned back to say, “Once the autopsy is done, I want a full report as soon as possible. He’s gotta screwup sometime.”

“I’ll let you know as soon as I’m done.” Joly nodded, motioning for the body to be put on the gurney. Putting his hand on Cosettes’ shoulder, he said, “Go get some rest. I’ll be in the Morgue early tomorrow morning, I’ll most likely be staying there all night. I’ll have Musichetta pick me up something to eat.” Cosette half smiled and tapped Enjolras’ car window.

“I’m crashing with you tonight.”

“I’m not cooking you breakfast.”

“Got it, Partner.” she climbed in the passenger seat, reclining the seat to a point where she was laying down like she were sleeping on a bed.

“Once you contact the parents, get a picture. Have them ID the girl. I want you go around that area, search for anything you can find. Security cameras, missed evidence, store clerks-but be sure to bring me back that witness and somebody that knew the kid. Flash the picture, do anything you have to. Our perp could be picking out his next victim at the local Toys R Us.” Javert stood up from his seat, opening his office door for Enjolras and Cosette.

“We have to stop by the Morgue first,” Cosette paused, “Jehan has some news for us.” she leaned in and whispered, “Captain, you gotta let us go. Enjolras is about to have a breakdown. Let him see the girl.”

“Who said you couldn’t go?” Javert pointed with his eyes over to the door, patting Enjolras’ on the back while he was on his way out.

-

“It’s our guy,” Joly uncovered the body and read from his clipboard. “everything is exactly the same-right down to the very clothes she was wearing. Abused, bruised everywhere that can be hidden with clothes. Both the girl and the doll are wearing the same clothes- “Plaid Party Dress for Girls” Item number F3619 and F3615, American Girl brand. But this time,” Joly held up a plastic bag, “he left the tags.”

-

“We’ve got to stop at the store,” Enjolras stopped the car.

“What’ve we got to show the employees if we don’t have a picture to show them? Enjolras, you can’t avoid it.” Cosette laid her hand on top of Enjolras’ that sat on the gear shift. “We’ll go right after this is done.”

-

“You didn’t report her to missing persons-”

“We thought she had just stopped by the pet store on the way home!” The mother was distressed, cutting off every sentence Cosette started. The father, holding her back said, “Why are you targeting my wife? She doesn’t know any more than she has already told you.”
