AUTHOR'S NOTE:  This piece was written about a guy I was seeing for a while back in 2000 or 2001, the same guy I wrote 'Song of the Centaur' for, which is also included in this book.

-- The song is 'Spaceboy' by The Smashing Pumpkins, from their 1993 album Siamese Dream. :)

            LONGNECK

            Tip that longneck back, babe!

Keep sucking down those golden rivers of

            such sweet succulence...

We are, all of us, searching for...

            For what -- Meaning? Feeling?

                    ... A sense of understanding?

Yet when found, belongs only in

            instant gratification and

            false satisfactions

of the brief yet lingering happiness in the

            faces of others.

They are smiling. They are laughing.

                        ... Are we?

                      The balance never was.

Those feelings, deep and true, when found,

            you think aren't yours

Yet are all too much like the

            blood that flows so freely

            from your self inflicted wounds...

                      The balance never was.

Your worries, a speck of dust.

            Your fears, imagined from within.

No problems, only actions, and reactions.

                      The balance never was,

and was never supposed to be.

And those sweet, succulent mongrels hover...

                          ... waiting ...

To lap you up into their

            Spoon-fed existence --

                        Let the feast begin!
