I got in the car and started driving, the fact that it was now quite dark out made it hard to see. I didn't know what Michael's plan was, but I had learned before that it was best to just do what he said. As I drove, I imagined what Michael could possibly be doing. I imagined he went back through the window and saved everyone. He gave them money and whatever else they wanted and told them to leave everyone alone. But Michal always wanted to seem like a tough guy, he always wanted to be the winner.
When I got into my apartment I grabbed one of Michael's smaller suitcases, which was still sitting by the window. I filled a canteen with water and placed it in the bag, followed by several containers of nuts I had. I didn't know what food would stay good and which would go rotten, but I also put in a frozen pizza and bag of un-cooked pasta. I also put the laptop in, even though I didn't know if we were going to be able to use it where ever we were going.
I grabbed a handful of my clothes and a handful of Michael's, and lastly I took the two necklaces like he had said. I put mine around my neck and put Michael's in with the rest of the stuff. I ran towards the door with the suitcase, but felt myself trip over something. I looked down and saw something shiny sticking out from under the sofa Michael slept on.
Now, you might think I should have probably gotten going, but sometimes curiosity makes people do stupid things. As for me, I was always curious which was why Michael always called me stupid. I pulled it out from under the sofa and saw it was a briefcase, kind of like the ones lawyers carry around. I un-clatched it and opened it gently, finding two small pistols inside. One for me one for Michael. I closed it and carried it in my other hand towards the car.
I had never fired a gun before, but when I got in the car I took both of them out, leaving one on the seat next to me. I didn't know if it was loaded or not but there was no ammo in the case. Just the guns. I started driving towards the party, figuring that would be a better direction than anywhere else. I dialed my phone number on Ryan's phone but Michael didn't pick up. That made me scared and I drove faster, probably breaking the speed limit. I always had to think of the worst scenario possible. I imagined going into the party to find a bunch of police and the four men gone and all or my friends lying on the ground- I tried to think of other things.
Suddenly I saw Gus's house come in to view. I got out of the car, not bothering to turn it off or close the door.
"MICHAEL?" I yelled. Almost everyone who had been inside were now out by the cars, talking very loudly. "Holy shit should we try calling them again?" and "Where did they go?" were a few of the things I heard them saying.
Some of them came up to me before I could approach them. And by 'some of them' I mean Geoff.
"Holy shit Gavin what the fuck is going on?" he asked. He looked very stressed.
"I don't know, why don't you tell me," I said.
"Well some guys came in here looking for Michael, something about a chip. Michael started running down the street and the guys chased after him, we don't know where they went. There were fucking gunshots! Ray and Ryan chased after them and we called the cops-"
That was all I needed to hear. I gave Geoff a pat on the back and ran back into the car. If I had known that was probably the last time I'd ever see him, I would have gave him a big hug and told him the truth about me and Michael. As I drove the way Geoff had pointed, I heard him yell "Stop it with the secrets man! We're all so fucking confused!"
I followed the road, squinting out into the night and looking for clues. I stopped driving when I saw a body on the road. "Bullocks," I whispered to myself. I looked closer and saw it was a skinny male figure with a misshaped head, half of which was blown off. Blood oozed out of him. I didn't observe for very long, probably because I didn't want to think about who it could have been.
I kept going until l thought I heard a noise. I heard it again. "Help!" It was Michael without a doubt.
Now realizing where the sound was coming from, I stepped on the gas and looked into a narrow alleyway type thing in between two houses. I made a sharp turn and everything went so fast after that. I saw two of the guys guarding the outside of the alleyway, and the other two had their back to me and their guns raised. I realized they were pointed straight at Michael's head as one of them said, "Fine then, you give us no choice."
That was when I drove straight at them, trying to run them over. They quickly jumped out of the way and I stopped the car moments before it ran into Michael. "Gavin!" He yelled in relief. He quickly went around and got in the passenger seat, finding his gun. I put the car in reverse and tried to get out as fast as I could.
"Keep your head down!" Michael yelled, ducking away from the window so he didn't get shot. The four men bashed their fists at the window and yelled things in a foreign language. I felt my body get stiff with fear as if it might suddenly shut down but kept going. I got out of the alley and turned the car with all my strength. At full speed, I drove it the opposite direction of what had been a party a few minutes ago.
Michael sat up and smiled at me, laughing with relief. "Holy shit did you see that?"
"Yes I bloody saw that, what now?" I asked in an irritated voice.
"Just keep driving."
The faint sound of police sirens started echoing in the distance. "SHIT!" Michael yelled.
"Aren't the police on our side?"
"Not if they recognize me!"
"Recognize you?" I asked in confusion. "Recognize you for what?"
There was a sudden gun shot. Michael turned around in his chair. "Fuck! We've got the police and the fucking thieves after us!"
I looked behind us and saw multiple cars behind us, the ally-way people behind us and the cops behind them. "WHAT NOW!? I asked, wishing we could have at least one of them on our side.
"Where did they even get that car from?" he asked himself, his voice cracking. He was obviously under a lot of stress. I was too, but I hadn't been as close in the hands of death a couple of minutes ago.
"You're okay, right?"
"They're far behind though, and only firing at each other." he said, completely ignoring my question.
I drove up onto a main road kind of like a free way, figuring I might be able to outrun them. It was now pitch black so I turned on the headlights. A hill leading down to a scary looking forest stood to our left, which looked like the kind of place slender man might live. Michael didn't give me any instructions on where to drive.
"What are we going to do?" I asked.
Michael thought about it for a bit. "You have the necklaces right?' He asked, double checking.
"Ya."
"Get down, I'm going to try to shoot out the back window."
I did as he said, and heard an extremely loud pang, followed by the shattering of the glass. He looked over at me to make sure I was alright and then fired a couple of shots through the back.
"I'm scared Michael," I said, looking for some reassurance that everything was alright.
"We'll be out of here soon buddy."
Another gunshot was fired from somewhere behind us followed by an immediate booming and screeching noise.
"Michael what was that?" I asked not bothering to make my voice sound brave.
"A cop car just got blown up. Holy shit!"
I tried to ignore all the noise and stay focused on the road, even though it wasn't too hard because there were no cars around. I heard the gunshots get louder and realized they were now shooting at us. I didn't want to be in this situation. I didn't see how there was any way we were going to get out of it.
Just as my thoughts were starting to get more positive, I heard a loud popping noise followed by the car jumping up and starting to wildly spin out of control.
"GAVIN!" Michael yelled at me.
I realized too late that someone had shot out our now flat tire, trying to make it go in a straight like on the road but it was no use. With one final jerk the car drove us down the hill right into the forest. Before I could comprehend what was happening the front of the car rammed into a tree and I felt myself fly out of my seat.
