I woke up to the sound of Michael's screaming. I sat up too quickly, and my head began to feel dizzy. I put my hand on my head and felt a large bruise. Ow!
Michael stormed in to the room and noticed I was awake. "OH YOU'RE FINALLY UP! CARE TO EXPLAIN WHAT HAPPENED?!?"
I looked at the chair tipped sideways on the ground and the pile of ropes next to it, trying to think of words to say. Why hadn't Samuel killed me? He had the chance to whack me to death with a chair but didn't.
Michael let out another angry scream and started punching the air, trying to get his anger out on something. He picked up the chair and slammed it against the wall, making it break into lots of different pieces. I held myself up with my elbows as I tried to visualize what happened. I had trusted Samuel! I realized that he might have not even had a wife or a friend who died. Maybe right from the beginning he had just been trying to get himself free from Michael.
"Because I'm the weak one," I muttered very quietly to myself. Michael was able to hear me over his heavy breathing.
"THE WEAK ONE? THAT'S PUTTING IT LIGHTLY GAVIN! YOU'RE A FUCKING IDIOT!" This was definitely one of the most angry stages I had ever seen him in.
"TELL ME EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED!" He screeched.
"S-Samuel took advantage of me.."
"HE TOOK ADVANTAGE OF YOU? NO, I DON'T THINK HE TOOK ADVANTAGE OF YOU BECAUSE I THINK YOU JUST DECIDED TO LET HIM GO. IS THAT WHAT HAPPENED?"
"No Michael! I just... I just... you're right. I am an idiot."
"NOW YOU REALIZE!" He rubbed his head in the spot where his eyebrows were with two fingers, trying to think.
"So what do we do now? What's you're genius plan to fix this?" He asked sarcastically.
"Can't we just... let him go?" I asked cautiously. "What's the worst he can do?"
Michael slowly turned his head around and gave me the 'are you fucking serious??' face. He opened his mouth as if he was about to say something, before quickly closing it.
"Maybe..." He said to himself. "Maybe we could just let him go." He started walking around in circles and that's how I knew he had a plan.
"What do you mean Mi-cool?" I asked, slowly getting up. He didn't seem to feel any sympathy for me, even though I felt like shit. I had spent the entire night on the floor, but he probably thought I had gotten what I deserved.
"We need to get the mind scanning devices, right?" He asked.
"Or we could just go home and forget any of this ever happened," I muttered. Quite honestly I didn't want to go on a computer for eternity. I didn't care how much effort Michael put into saving the chip or that Ray died in the process. I didn't want to be involved in any of this bullshit, I just wanted to go home. But what was the point of going home if I couldn't go with Michael?
"You know what I think, Gavin?" He asked with a huge mischievous grin on his face.
"What?"
"I think it's good you let Sam go. Maybe your stupidity actually helped us!"
"Never heard that before," I said with a laugh.
"Think about it. Where do you think Sam is going now that he's free?"
"Back to his boss?"
"And where do you think the brain scanning material is?"
I started putting 2 and 2 together to see what on earth Michael was talking about. Michael just laughed as he watched my confused face. Then he walked over to me and messed up my hair, letting me know he wasn't angry anymore.
"Pack up everything and put it in the car," Michael said before walking out the door.
I wanted to say no, I really did. But what was my other option? To leave him? All of my stuff was already in the car, so I just packed it into suitcases and threw some dirty clothes in the trunk. Michael was already in the front seat of the car waiting for me, so I just hopped in without saying a word.
Michael put the keys in the ignition and turned the car around immediately, driving back towards the way we came.
"How do you know he went this way?" I asked.
"I don't know for sure, he probably had no idea where he was. But he's going to have to come this way at some point if he's ever going home. And my guess is he's not walking too far away from the road." He did have a point.
We spent a while driving. Michael let me turn on the radio if I kept it on low volume, but I wasn't aloud to sing like I usually did with Michael. He had to keep reminding me to keep a look out for Sam when I got distracted. I had a few snacks during the trip, and kept trying to feed Michael since neither of us had any breakfast. It got to the point where I was just stuffing baby carrots in his mouth.
"Common baby Mi-cool eat your carrots so you can grow up big and strong," I said, teasing him. I burst out laughing as he refused to spread his teeth apart.
"I will fucking burn you Gavin."
"A growing boy needs his protein!"
"If you don't shut the fuck up right now..."
Michael suddenly stopped the car, jerking me back in my seat and making the carrot fly out of my hand.
"What is it?" I whispered to him, confused.
"Get down!" He said, already ducking under the window. I looked around outside before doing as he said.
"What is it?" I asked again.
"Someone's out there, to the left of the road. I think it's him."
Michael turned off the music and then slowly put his face up to the glass on his side of the car. I tried to focus my eyes past his giant curly hair and into the trees. I couldn't say for sure, but I thought I saw movement.
"I think he saw us. He's moving away from us now!" Michael said, bobbing his head to get a better view.
"What do we do?!?" I asked, panicking.
"We can't keep going in the car, he can easily recognize it. I'm going to have to go on foot." He hastily grabbed his jacket and put is arms in the sleeves. "You watch the car."
"But.. but..." I muttered, trying to find words to say. I didn't want him to go. He reached for the gun in the passanger mirror and took it, placing it in is pants.
"I have Ryan's phone. I'll call when I need you, okay?" I wanted to lean over and give him a goodbye kiss, but I didn't have the balls. Even after all we'd been through. He just looked into my eyes as if he was sorry, but sorry wasn't enough. He reached into the bag of carrots on my lap and stuffed several in his mouth before jumping out of the car and leaving me all alone. I watched as he closed the door and started running in the direction he said he saw Samuel. He ran and dodged behind trees and I couldn't help but think he looked like a ninja. A very bad ninja. Eventually the trees got in the way and I could no longer see him. I could only hope he was alright.
I let out a long sigh. What a twisted love story I had gotten myself into.
