A voice startled me awake, and I sighed when I recognized the origin.

"Adrian, what do you want?"

He smiled, his green eyes brightening as he lifted me out of the hammock and into his lap. His brown hair flopped into his eyes as he took another long drag from his cigarrette. I coughed, fanning the smoke away from my face as he laughed.

"Nasty habit!" I whisper-yelled, and he laughed.

"Sorry 'bout that, princess." I glared, and he smirked. "It keeps me under control."

Adrain was a spirit user, and the only other person who knew of my real origin. He knew I was a Vladimair. He knew I controlled all of the elements. He knew I had to use a fake name and birth certificate to go to school. Everything.

He was also my best friend.

There is stuff I don't tell him about me; the huge crush I have on him, the times I went Strigoi hunting and actually won, the way the sun doesn't really affect me at all, and how much I really know about spirit and it's uses. Other than those things, he pretty much knows everything.

He pinced me lightly on my chest, and I slapped his hand away.

"Don't touch my boob, you disgusting idiot!" I nearly yelled.

"Well it's not my fault, Ms 34-D!" He defended.

It's true - my boobs are unusually large for a Morei. My skin is unusually tan for a Morei too. That's why I had to enroll in school as a dhampir. I told officials I was actually a Morei, and they said they would keep my secret if I enrolled as a dhampir but didn't take part in becoming a guardian. I agreed, even though I secretly really want to become a gaurdian.

About a year ago, Adrain showed up in the picture, and decided he'd stay with me whether I liked it or not. It must be that stupid, obbssesive personality of his.

He looked at me then, his eyes growing serious. "What are you thinking about? Your arua's changing."

"Nothing." I said almost automatically. He shrugged, and continued blowing smoke in my face. I fanned it away. "Why did you ask?"

"I've been blowing smoke in your face for five minutes, and you've said nothing at all." Oh. "Have you had any more visions of Dimitri? Is it really possible for him to turn back into a dhampir again?" His tone was flat - emotionless. I knew of his relationship with Roza, and even though it's not really something I'm fond of I deal with it.

"Yes." His jaw clenched, and I couldn't help the smile that spread across my face. He's so cute when he's jealous. "So when can I meet him?"

He looked down, and his eyes becam wary. "Soon," he said simply. "But for right now, you have to stay here."

I sighed.

"Don't be such a downer," he said, trying to lighten the mood. "I promise to take you to the Court when all this Strigoi mess is over with, but for right now, you stay here, 'Kay kid? I want to keep you safe." He snuggled me closer into his chest and I relaxed a little.

He wants to bring an unlicensed, unknown dhampir to the court.

That will be a disaster.

After Adrian left, I sighed.

"Goodbye, love." I whispered as his car drove off into the distance.

Then suddenly, I heard a movement. The rotting stench of metal and a dead corspe filled my nostrils as a man walked in front of me.

Strigoi.
