When we got to Hogwarts, the gamekeeper greeted everybody. I couldn't wait to get sorted . I was beaming at the thought of everything. The castle was beautiful, and watching it from the boats we went on was magical. At the same time, though, I remembered Sirius Black...treating me like scum. I should've expected that, though, right? But I thought that even though I didn't get along with just 5 people, I can still rise up and make more friends in a school of millions of people. As we got to Hogwarts, Professor Mcgonagoll, if I heard right, explained everything and all of the first years, including me, went inside the dining hall. It was beautiful with its golden exterior and decor. The ceiling was enchanted to look like the night sky, as a girl said behind me. There was a feast for the beginning of the year. As we walked in, Sirius caught my eye. He was like a celebrity, surrounded by more than 5 girls at a time. I don't understand how this is possible when he was just like the rest of us first years. It's crazy. I noticed that his friend, James, wasn't surrounded by girls. Is he any different, by a tiny percentage of a chance?
We stood in line to the sorting hat and I zoned out until they called Sirius. I thought he would get into Slytherin for sure. But he got into the house I wished he would never go to. Gryffindor. How come he got into Gryffindor? I think there is a mistake. As I stand with my mouth agape, Sirius smirked at me and I looked away. People went by and it was my turn. "Sapphire Evergreen." Professor Mcgonagoll said. I went to sit on the stool and Sirius was glaring at me. I tried to shake it off and listen to the sorting hat. "Hm....brave, smart, shy, and cunning. Where to place you? No, not Slytherin. Maybe Ravenclaw? Hm....better be GRYFFINDOR!!" The stares bore into me until the sorting hat made its decision and what must be the Gryffindor table applauded for me. I sat with the girl that was sorted right before me. Lily Evans. I introduced myself, but she was staring at the Sorting Hat and the kids being sorted. She was probably waiting for a friend. I heard the boys' names and Opal. They were all in Gryffindor. How come this is happening to me? When the sorting finished, the headmaster gave a speech and let us enjoy the feast.
I got some juice, sausages, and mashed potatoes for myself and I stopped when I heard a voice behind me. "So, Sapphire, you and me, library Saturday?" I knew that voice. It's the voice that screamed at me on the train. Sirius. Why doesn't he understand that I am beyond not interested? When he asked me, all the girls giggled and were whispering at me to say 'yes'. I hesitated. Saying yes might get me friends and I desperately need those right now. But, in a whirlwind of decisions, I decided to stay true to myself. "I don't want to be anywhere with you, Black! LEAVE ME ALONE!" I screamed. Apart from stray conversation, the dining hall silenced. The girl Lily looked at me with confusion. Or was it surprise? The other girls, including Opal, glared at me. Opal said,"How could you not want to go out with him? He is so cute. But then again, how could you bring only one suitcase?" All the girls laughed, except Lily. I didn't want her to laugh, but I was surprised.
As the girls laughed, boys joined in, including Black, Potter, Lupin, and Pettigrew. It felt like all of Hogwarts was laughing at me. For what? For not being like every girl out there. I pounded my fist on the table and left. I knew exactly where the Gryffindor common room and dormitories were, but a prefect escorted me. I thanked her. Before she left, she told me who I was sharing the room with. I sighed. How come?
