As night fell over the arena, Nate breathed a sigh of relief. The first day of the games was over and, to his knowledge, no one had died. He hadn't expected anyone to die, they were all seasoned athletes and professionals at survival. Matthew was too smart to die, Abigail was too skilled, Zeth was too tough, Eduardo was too strong, and Kelsey... Well, Kelsey was one of Nate's best friends from back in the day. No one would dare kill her. All the contenders knew that Nate would hunt Kelsey's killer ruthlessly and with all the resources available to him. Luckily, he was sure no one was stupid enough to blatantly challenge him by killing one of his closest friends.
At midnight, Nate and his team were abruptly roused from sleep by the booming of the games announcer's voice emanating from speakers hidden throughout the stadium.
"Alright contestants, the first day o the games is over, and there has only been one death!" Nate and Vinny made eye contact, minds racing to try and figure out who the first kill had been. "And now, at midnight of the first day, some of you lucky contestants have been sent gifts from friends and patrons in PVC. These gifts will now airdropped to your general location. Let's hope you have some wealthy friends!" With that, the speakers crackled and then sputtered out. Vinny, Nate, and Kira all glanced towards the sky, hoping for a gift to fall. After about a minute, a white parachuted opened above them and descended downwards. The parachute had a long, slim crate attached to it. Nate, being the tallest, caught the parachute and pulled the crate free. It was addressed to Kira. He grabbed a fishing knife from inside his survival pack and pried the crate open. Nate's eyes widened and he whistled softly. Kira scooted up next to him.
"What is it?" She asked, trying to see around him. Nate reached into the crate and pulled out a serrated Wakizashi blade. Kira inhaled sharply, this was one of the most beautiful swords she had ever seen. The Wakizashi is a short katana made for both slashing and throwing. It was generally carried by samurai and, though it has less reach than the traditional katana, it is much faster and often much sharper. The tungsten sword gleamed in the light. Nate and Vinny eyed it enviously as Kira took a few test swings before sheathing it and curling up in her sleeping bag, sword in hand. As soon as cookie had dropped back into deep slumber, Vinny rounded
on Nate angrily.
"She has a weapon now!" He whispered urgently, "we should have killed her a long time ago and now, she's armed." Nate stared ahead, deep in thought.
"Just give me the knife and let me slit her throat right now!" Vinny demanded, his voice rising.
"Silence!" Nate whispered loudly, "if you try to harm her then it's your throat that will be slit!" Vinny reluctantly went back over to his sleeping bag. Nate began to pace around their camp. "The sword is a complication, yes." He said, "but I will soon have weapons of my own. My good-for-nothing secretary was late in mailing my throwing knife collection, but they will be here soon enough." He stopped next to his sleeping bag and took off the outer layer of his suit, leaving on the undershirt and compression shorts and hanging up the rest on a tree branch. He got into his sleeping bag and made himself comfortable. "Don't worry Vinny," he said after a moment of silence, "everything is going according to plan."
