"Why couldn't have I worn some gloves? Or even a pair of thick trousers?" I complained mostly to myself as I clung tightly with both hands to the tree branch above me. Marcel had himself perched at the top of the tree, which was swaying in the breeze. It was so close to snapping that if I came anywhere near it we would both end up dead. Of course my second day of 'training' would contain climbing trees. Tyler had already shown me his impeccable skill of jumping and climbing trees, and by the talk that Marcel gave me I was guessing I would have to be somewhat matching that. While struggling to climb, I decided to make some small talk. It was an easy way to find out some more about why the fuck I was being held here.

"So, how long do you think I'll have to be in the Vanoss house?" I asked.
"Until the year of reckoning is over. Then you'll be rendered useless to the Cryaotics."
"What do you mean 'rendered useless'?" I huffed, grabbing the next branch along.
"The prophecy says that this year the Cryaotic will use the key for reckoning, so after this year the prophecy won't count." He explained, sounding calm.
"What are they going to do to me?" A little panic in my voice.
"Well you need to be alive while they use the key or whatever, after they've done there would be no point in living anyway. The world would already be dead."
"Oh that's just wonderful." I replied sarcastically. I paused for a moment, so I could concentrate on getting up the branch. Once I was one up I continued.

"So could they jump us right now? And take me?"
"I guess so. Although Evan said we have a little time to get training in. The Cryaotic have to be told about the key before they go and find it, otherwise they would be searching the world. After that you're probably going to be spending a while in the containment centre. Any other stupid questions?"
"Where's the containment centre? How safe am I there? When can I get a phone? Do I get full meals and something to do?" Marcel gave a hard stare. "Well you did ask." I grabbed on to another branch which snapped under half my weight. I fell back down, gripping any branch I could go for. My hands, knees and everywhere else must have been so bruised. "Fuck!" I shouted, wrapping my arms around the branch.

"Classified. Very. Never. Yes and Maybe. You done now?" I didn't reply at first, as I was trying to get my leg up the branch. It slipped and my knee hit the wood again.
"Shit!" I growled, moving closer to the main stump of the tree. From there I gripped to the bark wall to my left and the branch on my right. I lifted one leg up and hauled myself up the next one. By now I was thoroughly out of breath. "Actually I have one more thing..." I began, sitting back against the tree to breathe. "Tori said she reported me to the royals, and they're going to come pick me up."
"They aren't going to take you away. We've agreed to keep you here."
"We? Not we! I never agreed to any of this." I protested, waving one arm.
"If you knew the royals you wouldn't go with them." Marcel said in a low tone.

"Forget about that shit anyway. Focus on the task at hand." He added after a moment of silence. I nodded in agreement, not sure of how much my voice would effect my performance. If I was going to be living with Marcel for the rest of the year I wouldn't want him to get so tired of me. I pulled myself up fully so I could stand on the branch. The next one up was a little bit out of my reach, meaning I would need to take another way around. I looked around the trunk, seeing a branch that met around my shoulder height. I saw no others that were any lower, so I had to go for it. I kept my right arm secured around the tree while the left reached out for it. That was just a centimetre out of reach. I grunted and kept trying to lean in. "You're gonna have to jump." Marcel shouted from above me.

I took a few deep breaths, prepping myself to jump. I swayed back and forth on the branch a little, taking in how far I would need to jump to be able to grab it. I wasn't a climber I was a tackler. I liked my feet on the ground. "Come on Mini you fucking pussy." I said to myself. "Just do it! That's what Shia would want!" I told myself even louder. With that I leapt across, letting go of the trunk to get a grip on the branch. I was so close, my little hands like claw grabbers, desperately trying to hold on. Unfortunately, just like the claw machines in arcades, my grip was too weak. My arms betrayed me, and I fell backwards. The next branch down was pretty far, and I landed on my back. Ouch. "Ffffaack!" I complained loudly, not daring to move from where I was. I heard Marcel sigh. I looked up at him, seeing him perched like a bird in a tree.

He used one arm to swing down from a branch to another. Then his other arm caught the trunk where he slid down to my level. He stood on the branch that I also occupied, making it bend a little. He looked down at me with a tired expression. He was about to say something until he heard a noise from within the forest. His head snapped to look in the direction of where it came from. I didn't hear a noise, but I could tell he did. He looked back at me and held out an arm. "Get up, training is over." He stated, his hand gesturing for me to take it. I gladly took it and used him to get up. My back was in extreme pain, and so was the rest of me. I kept my grip on Marcel, indicating for him to help me. He rolled his eyes and helped me get down from the tree.
