The blackout doesn't hold on for too long, only a couple of seconds, I think. I stand up and stumble upon half burned wooden planks. When I see the light I increase my speed and almost fall down the three steps that lead down to the grass.Five or six steps down the lawn and I'm met by Sylvie. She grab the baby and run away to the ambulance, I think. I'm dizzy and everything is blurry. I've gotten a slight cut somewhere on my forehead but it doesn't seem to be that bad, but I do have blood running down over my eye.
My entire body is aching and when I'm close to the truck I stumble over a rock and fall, but I get caught by Jimmy. I fall into his arms and he help me get my balance back. I can't stop coughing.
"Casey!" I hear Boden scream to me. He's angry.
He comes against me and I stay where I am.
"When I say now I mean now and not two minutes later. He say "now go with Jimmy and let him check you"
"Oh, I'm fine chief" I say and cough.
"It was not a question" He say.
On our way to a second ambulance I manage to grab a bottle of water. I pour most of it in my face but I spare some to drink. I sit down on the stretcher, far out to let the sunshine shine in my face. I have my helmet in my knee but Jimmy grab it and but it aside. I cough, not only once. That I took my gas mask off gave me a quite serious smoke inhalation. But Jimmy already knows that, so he doesn't say anything about it. He put a oxygen mask over my mouth and nose, and keep his focus on the wound instead.
Jimmy clean the wound and give me a piece of packing to hold over it, just to stop the bleeding till I reach the hospital; because I need stitches. While I try to find a comfortable position, Jimmy close the doors and we leave the scene.
"Are you okay?" Jimmy asks, probably because of my extremely sad and deadly look.
"Yeah" I say and cough.
I really believe in everything Boden says and what I did was wrong, even though all I did was to save a life. That's the hard part with this job, sometimes you have to leave someone behind in order to preserve yourself. It breaks you down sometimes.
˜
We pull up at the hospital and when the woman who drove the ambulance open the doors I get ready to walk but Jimmy push me down and makes me lean down in the stretcher that at the moment is like a chair. As they push me through the door I feel my head bolting. I'm really glad Jimmy convinced me not to walk all the way from the ambulance to ER.On our way to the room we're going to I meet Will Halstead. He decides to walk with us to the room.
"So you decided to drop by?" Will says as a joke.
"Yeah" I say and smile. Followed by some coughs. I kind of sound like Darth Vader when I talk through this mask.
It feels like my head is going to explode. Seriously.
