I watch my feet take steps over the asphalted driveway, my dusty sneakers taking me one step closer to the firehouse for every time I put my leg in front of the other. I'm very happy at this place, here's the job of my dreams and the woman of my life. But I also have my very best friends here, I've known a lot of them for a really long time and they are a great part of this as well.Opening the door and walking by the trucks, and through the house spread a warm feeling within me. I can't resist to smile. I know, I've been gone for a day but for one second I deeply thought I had spent my last second at 51. When I fell down from second floor, I thought for one second that I would die.
"There he is!" Everyone says when I walk into the common room.
I smile. Herrmann who is quick to come forward, gives me a hug and a tap on my shoulder.
"Glad you're okay lieutenant" He say.
"Thank you guys, I appreciate it" I say to everyone, they just gave me such a warm welcome. I love these people.
I walk to the counters and grab a plate, I serve myself some breakfast that Gabby has done. I sit down with the others, they have already started. Because Dr.Rhodes released me an hour ago, I came a bit late to work but I guess that's okay anyway.
It's our last day of shift today, shift ends at 9pm and after that I'm going to take Gabby home and make her a festive night-dinner. She really deserve that. If we count every time Gabby has done something good for me and the times I've done something good for her, it'll be a very clear difference. I need to make it up to her because she reallys shows she like me and I have to show her back.
"Casey" Boden says.
I look up from my plate and see Boden at the door. I know he want to talk to me so I fold the newspaper I'm reading and place it on the table. On my way towards him I place my empty plate in the sink. I leave my coffee mug on the table to hopfully have time to drink it up later.
Boden and I walk through the firehouse and reach his office. He get in and sit down on the edge of his desk.
"Close the door" He say.
To close the door behind you often means that it's something important.
"I talked to Rhodes, I want you to lay low today" he say.
Take a step closer to him.
"But I'm cleared for duty" I say.
"It's not an option, lay low or go home"
No room for discussion, that's for sure. I know Boden is right, he always is and it hurts. Sometimes you wish his words means nothing and that you can ignore them and move on, but we all know it would end up with catastrophes all over the place.
