Chapter 1
The hot air of my room suffocated my lungs, making it harder to breathe as I gamed.
"Hold on Jerome, I'm opening a window," I said over Skype.
"Alright biggums," he says, jumping up and down in the Minecraft game. I stand up and walk to my window as I hear Jerome singing a song loudly through my headset.
"Jerome! Shut up!" I yell. He laughs and continues. I smile and roll my eyes as I rolled the window in place.
I start walking back when I trip over an extension chord, twisting twice around my ankle. I scream in pain.
"Mitch? Mitch! Are you okay?" Jerome yells through the headset.
"I don't know! Call Nooch!" I yell back to him. Hot tears start falling down my cheeks as I try to unravel the chord from my pulsing ankle.
"Nooch! It's Jerome!" Jerome said frantically into his phone. There was a pause before he spoke again.
"You need to go to Mitch's house. He went to open a window and he tripped over something and screamed. I don't know what's happening!" Jerome said, pressing the shift key over and over making his player repeatedly squat.
"Thank you Nooch," he said after a few moments silence. I heard him close his phone and roll his chair back to Skype.
"He'll be over in a few minutes," he said. He turned his attention back to the Livestream we were on.
"Uh, Mitch, if you couldn't tell is in really bad pain. We'll get back to the Livestream another time but thank you all for watching and good night everybody," Jerome ended the stream as Nooch ran into my room.
"What happened?" he asked.
"I tripped over this chord," I say, holding up a thick, orange, extension chord. Nooch squatted by me and lifted up my ankle to see. A purple and blue ring traced around my ankle, blood starting to dot about it.
"We need to get you to a hospital quick," Nooch said. He went to my computer, said bye to Jerome, and shut off Skype before returning to me and helping me to his car. He put me in the passenger seat before running to the opposite side and starting the ignition. He got into the car and drove to the hospital.
Nooch turned off the car after we pulled into the parking lot of the hospital. He quickly ran to my side and helped me out of the car, putting one of my arms around his neck. He grabbed onto my wrist with his left hand, and wrapped his right arm around my torso to help me walk. I limped to the doors as a nurse walked by. She quickly backtracked and asked what was wrong.
"My friend's ankle got caught in an extension chord and it wrapped and tightened around it. His ankle is swelling and there's blood and a blue and purple ring is forming," Nooch said. The nurse nodded and told us to wait in the waiting room. Nooch helped me to the waiting room where 5 other people sat.
A boy about 13 holding a fishing line from his lip, a 50 year old man with a cane stood next to him, a girl about 18 sat holding an ice pack to her wrist, another girl holding one to her ribs, and another boy around 15 holding his head in agony. I sat next to the girl with the ice-packed wrist. Nooch sat by the one with the ice-packed ribs.
"What happened to you?" she asked.
"Extension chord wrapped around my ankle. What about you?" I ask.
"Bike crash. My friend Sadie was on the other bike," she said pointing to the girl with the ice pack on her ribs, flirting with Nooch.
"Whose your friend?" she asks. I turn to her.
"Matt, I call him Nooch," I say. She laughs.
"Nooch? What nickname is that?" she says.
"His last name," I say. She stops laughing.
"Oh, sorry," she says. I shake my head, chuckling to myself.
"It's fine, he gets it a lot," I say. She smiles and sticks out her hand.
"I'm Rebecca. You?" I take her hand.
"Mitchell. Call me Mitch," I say, shaking her hand. She smiles at me warmly before taking out a pen and paper and wrote something.
"Call me," she says, handing me the piece of paper. I nod, fold it and put it in my pocket.
"I will do that once I get out of this hell," I say, motioning around the room. I glance over at Matt, who was on full make out with Sadie.
"Seems like Matt and Sadie are being social," I say, nudging Rebecca. She looks over before bursting into laughter. Matt looked over and so does Sadie. Sadie smiles at Rebecca weakly. Matt looks at me and made a sex face before slightly hip thrusting. I laugh at Matt's gestures. Sadie looks back him before he presses his lips to hers. I roll my eyes at him before two nurses emerge.
"Rebecca and Mitchell?" they say. I wave my hand over to us. One nurse takes Rebecca while the other helps me up and leads me to a room. She puts me in a chair and writes down my medical information. Then she goes on to inspect my ankle before wrapping it in medical tape and gauze . She gives me crutches and teaches me how to walk with them.
"You're good to go Mitch. Have a good day," she says showing me the door. It was a pretty door. I walk out of the room to be greeted by Rebecca.
"How'd it go?" I ask her. She shrugs and show me her wrist.
"Hurts but I'm okay," she says. "How'd it go with you?"
"Eh, it was okay," I say, clapping my crutches together and then proceeded walking again. Rebecca laughs and keeps walking with me. We enter the waiting room with a smiling 13 year old with a stitch in his lip, a 15 year old boy with his mom crying silently as if he was brought bad news. I felt bad. I walked up to him.
"Hey, what's wrong?" I ask. He looks up. His eyes widen.
"You're Bajan Canadian! I love your videos dude," he says. I smile.
"Tanks dood," I say. He smiles big and wipes a tear away.
"I saw you crying. What's wrong?" I ask. He smiles fades.
"I have brain cancer. There's a tumor in my brain," he says. My eyes start to well with tears. I hug him the best I could with my crutches. He hugs me back, crying into my chest.
"I'm sorry," I say. He nods and goes back to sit down.
"Stay strong dood," I say.
"Tanks dood," he says, giving me a small wave before him and his mother walk out of the waiting room. I turn back to Rebecca, who had tears streaming down her face.
"Mitch," she says. I crutch up to her and hug her. She hugs me back, putting her face in the crook of my neck. She lets me go and I walk back to Matt.
"Poor guy," he says, nodding to the boy. I turn towards the boy and start crutching towards him.
"Hey wait!" I yell. He turns.
"What's your name?" I ask him.
"Dustin," he says.
"Okay. Well Dustin, keep watching my videos, and you'll get a shoutout okay?" I say. He smiles really big and hugs me again.
"Thank you Mitch," he says, lets me go and runs back to his mom. Matt puts his hand on my shoulder.
"You did good, Mitch," he said.
"I know I did," I look at him and smile before crutching to the car.
