"WAKE UP!!!"
"AAAHHHH!!!" I screamed. I sat up and saw Minho standing next to my bed, laughing.
"Well that got you up fast," he commented.
"Whatever."
"Come on, we gotta hurry up," Minho said impatiently.
I just remembered that I was going to run in the Maze today. I quickly got out of bed.
"I'll meet you in the Map Room," Minho told me.
I nodded and once he was out, I changed my clothes. I ran to the Map Room, not wanting to waste time.
"Okay," Minho said as I stood next to him, studying the map of the Maze. "We're going to run Section 7 today."
"Okey dokey," I replied.
We went to Frypan and had a quick breakfast and packed our lunch. Minho showed me a small room of weapons and I took a couple knives. Then we headed out into the Maze.
"Just follow me and you'll be fine," Minho told me.
"Alright."
I ran behind Minho and I kept up pretty well. In fact, I wasn't even running at full speed. If I were, I probably would've passed him.
"Shuck Addison, you are fast," Minho commented.
"I know," I grinned.
We continued running and I looked around, observing the walls surrounding me. I noticed that there were signs everywhere. I read them. World in Catastrophe: Killzone Experiment Department. What did that mean? I wondered.
"Hey, Minho?"
"Yeah?"
"What's World in Catastrophe: Killzone Experiment Department?" I asked.
"Don't know," Minho admitted. "Those signs are everywhere. Have no idea what it means so we don't pay attention to them."
"Okay," I said. I didn't know why but for some reason those words seemed familiar.
As we turned corners, I started to feel more and more comfortable. As if I've been here before. It was like I've ran in this Maze my whole life and knew where every turn led to.
"You're a natural!" Minho laughed. "I don't know how you're so comfortable out here."
I laughed. "I don't know why I'm so comfortable out here either but I am!"
We must have been running for at least three hours. The sun was directly overhead and although it felt good, it was also starting to get hot.
"Ready for a break?" Minho asked me.
"Sure," I said. I was really thirsty and could use a break.
"Looks like its about noon," Minho said.
"Someone's observant," I replied sarcastically.
"Are you trying to out-sass the sass master?" Minho chuckled.
"Maybe," I giggled.
"Well then, maybe I should give you a punishment for a crime like that," Minho joked.
"What kind of punishment?" I asked, trying not to laugh.
"I was going to suggest that we eat lunch before you tried to be sassier than the sass master, so how about your punishment is that you watch me eat and we leave your food here overnight for the Grievers?" Minho smirked.
Once Minho mentioned food, I realized just how hungry I was. I returned his smirk and dug through my backpack. I pulled out the sandwich Frypan had made for me and took a bite.
Minho gasped. "Hey what about your punishment?" he asked sarcastically.
"Yeah right," I rolled my eyes. "Do you really think I will give up food?"
Minho laughed. "You're funny, Greenie."
I stopped in mid bite. "Hey! Don't call me that!"
"Sorry Greenie," Minho smirked.
"Stop," I whined.
"Aw, is wittle Gweenie upset?" he teased.
I folded my arms and pouted.
"I guess this is your punishment," Minho said. "I get to call you Greenie for the rest of the day."
"No," I whined.
"Sorry Greenie," Minho said before leaning into me. His lips were just less than an inch away from mine before I realized what was happening. I stepped back and Minho almost stumbled forward a bit.
"What was-"
'"I'm sorry, Addison," Minho interrupted me. "I-I didn't mean to-"
"It's fine." I said.
We ate lunch in silent and then went back to running. We didn't say anything at all. I followed Minho through the Maze, taking in all the surroundings. The walls covered in ivy stood high; it was hard to believe that the Maze actually changed over night.
We ran down corridors, turned corners and soon it was getting dark and it was time to start heading back.
Minho didn't say anything, so I kept my mouth shut as well. I figured he must feel awkward about what happened, but my only question was why. Why did he do that? As much as I wanted to know, I decided not to ask. I wouldn't get an answer anyway.
We had just barely made it back. When we were just two feet away from the Doors, they started to close. We sprinted through and made it back safely into the Glade.
"Addison, are you okay?" Newt asked as he ran toward me. He embraced me in a hug and I hugged him back.
"I'm fine," I said.
"Good," he replied, his eyes filled with worry. "I thought you weren't going to make it back in time."
He turned his head and I looked in the direction he was looking. Minho was walking toward the Map Room.
"You should go with him," Newt ordered. "You need to help him map the Maze."
I reluctantly nodded and ran to the Map Room. When I entered, Minho looked up from mapping and once he saw me, he immediately looked back down.
"Hey," I said quietly. "Need help?"
"No."
"Okay," I said, not sure where this was going. "Can I help you anyway?"
He just shrugged.
I came next to him and looked at the map.
"Addison," Minho said. I looked at him. "I'm so sorry about earlier. I wasn't thinking. I just-"
"What?"
"I-I just wanted to, um, kiss you, because I, uh, I l-like you," Minho admitted.
"Oh, Minho," I said. I was flattered, but I didn't feel the same. How could I tell him?
"But I was so stupid for trying," Minho continued. "I knew you wouldn't let me. I know you like Newt."
"W-what?" I was shocked. How did he know?
"I see the way you look at him," Minho said. "If anything, you're in love with him. And I know he feels the same way about you. Can't have a conversation with that guy without him mentioning your name. The only reason why he didn't want you to be a Runner was because he was afraid of losing you. And I feel bad that he almost lost you today. We barely made it back in time and it was my fault."
"Minho, it wasn't your fault," I said.
"Yeah, it was," Minho protested.
I sighed. "Minho, seriously, I don't blame you for anything. This wasn't your fault."
"Whatever," Minho said. "Anyway, just go away. I'll map today. You can map tomorrow."
I just nodded and then left the room. I walked to my room and shut the door. I sat down on my bed and pondered everything that had just happened. I didn't realize until he said it, but we were about to be trapped in the Maze over night. I had been so close to death and I hadn't even realized it. And Minho admitted that he liked me. I would've never guessed. It was kind of strange knowing that but I decided I wouldn't act awkward around him or anything. I lay down on my bed a stared at the ceiling. It was then that I noticed how tired I was. It had been a long day for me. I closed my eyes and relaxed.
