"Addison, wake up," a voice said.
I opened my eyes, squinting at the face in front of mine, trying to get used to the blinding light from the sun that was slowly starting to creep up from behind the walls of the Maze.
"C'mon, we're gonna start heading toward the Doors," Minho stood up once he saw I was awake and he joined Thomas, who was trying to get Alby down from his hiding place in the ivy on the wall.
I got up and stretched. The Maze floor was not very comfortable but I did end up sleeping surprisingly well. Thomas and Minho got Alby down and laid him on the ground.
"All ready, Addison?" Minho asked.
I nodded.
"Great," Minho said as he and Thomas bent down to pick up Alby again. "Then let's go."
I led the way with Thomas and Minho behind me, carrying Alby.
"Need help?" I turned around and asked them.
"No, we're fine," Minho said.
"Okay," I said.
"You talk in your sleep, did you know that, Addi?" Thomas asked me.
"I do?" I asked, surprised.
"Yeah, you were talking last night," Thomas said.
"Really quite hard to get a good night's sleep when someone right next to you is talking," Minho added.
I gave them a confused look. What could I have possibly been saying? Since when did I talk in my sleep?
"Oh Newt! I'm so sorry! I never meant for any of this to happen!" Thomas said in a high pitched voice.
"I don't talk like that," I said, but I felt my face turn red which made both Thomas and Minho laugh.
"Newt, please forgive me! I love you!" Minho said, imitating Thomas's high pitched "girly" voice.
"Shut up," I rolled my eyes but I felt so embarrassed. Did I really say all of that in my sleep?
Thomas and Minho, who were trying hard not to laugh, could no long control themselves and burst out laughing.
"It's not that funny!" I said.
"Oh but it is!" Minho smirked.
"You guys are annoying," I rolled my eyes again.
"Sorry, but it is pretty funny," Thomas said.
"Ugh, whatever," I said, pretending to be mad at them.
It didn't take us long to get to the Doors of the Maze. We heard the Doors opening. Almost there, I thought. Just down this corridor and make a left turn and we'll be home and I'll see Newt again.Newt's POV
"NEWT! GET UP THE DOORS ARE OPENING! GET UP!!!"
I opened my eyes to see an excited Chuck standing over me. "What?"
"The Doors are opening! Come on, Newt! We need to go check to see if they're back yet!" Chuck said, shaking me.
"Alright, alright," I said reluctantly. I already knew that they were all gone. No one survives a night in the Maze. We lost Alby, Minho, Thomas, and Addison. My heart ached at the thought of Addison. The last time I saw her, we hadn't really been on good terms. I just wished that I could've told her how much I love her before she disappeared from my life forever.
Chuck seemed to believe that they would come back. I didn't want to think about the disappointment that would wash over the poor kid once he realized that the four aren't coming back.
We reached the Maze Doors which were now almost fully open. We stood there for a few moments, but no one was there. Even though this was what I had been preparing myself for since the moment they left, I felt as though my heart was being torn to pieces. I looked at Chuck, who's face fell when he saw that Addison and Thomas, the people he considered his big brother and sister, were nowhere to be seen.
"I'm sorry, Chuck," I whispered, trying not to break down. I had to be strong, at least for Chuck. The poor kid didn't choose to be in this situation.
I turned around and was about to start heading back to the Glade when Chuck yelled out, "Look!"
I turned my head and I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Addison was running toward the Glade with Thomas and Minho behind her, carrying Alby on their shoulders. If the way I felt at that moment wasn't pure happiness, I don't know what was.
Chuck seemed to be doing some kind of happy dance as Addison was the first to step foot into the Glade. She run over to Chuck and wrapped her arms around him, giving him a big hug. "I missed my little brother so much!" She said.
I felt awkward standing there watching, so I decided to go help Thomas and Minho with Alby. "What happened?" I asked.
"He got stung," Minho answered.
"How did you all survive over night?" I asked.
"Well, it was all thanks to shanks, Tweedledee," Minho said, nodding his head toward Addison, then to Thomas. "And Tweedledum here."
I glanced at Addison, who was now dealing with the paparazzi, also known as all the curious Gladers. I always knew she was brave but knowing that she was one of the first people to survive a night in the Maze made me have a whole new respect towards her. "We'll have a Gathering later," I said. "Now take Alby and go see Clint and Jeff."
Minho and Thomas nodded and headed toward the Medjack hut.
Addison's POV
"How did you survive?"
"What was it like?"
"Did you see a Griever?"
"Are you okay?!"
All these questions were making me feel overwhelmed and dizzy. All I really wanted was something to drink. My throat was really dry.
"Excuse me, sorry, get back to work!" An all too familiar British accent called out to the Gladers. One by one, the Gladers started to go back to work, leaving me along with Newt. "Hi," he said awkwardly.
"Hi," I said, not knowing how I should act.
"You okay?"
"Yeah."
"You're bleeding," Newt said, looking at my arm.
I looked down and saw a long scratch on my arm that was bleeding. I hadn't even noticed it until Newt pointed it out. "I probably just got scratched last night. I didn't even feel it."
"Maybe we should take you to the Medjacks," Newt said sounding like a worried mother.
"I'm fine, Newt," I said.
"You're sure?"
"Yes," I reassured him.
"Are you hungry? Want me to get you something to eat?"
Now that he mentioned it, I realized that I was just as hungry as I was thirsty. "Yeah, food sounds good right now," I laughed. "I could also go for some water too."
"Food and water," Newt repeated. "Sure, I'll go get you some. I'll be right back."
"I can go to the kitchen and get something," I said. "I'm sure you're really busy now. You don't need to waste your time doing something you don't need to do."
"You're not wasting my time, Addison," Newt said. "I want to do anything I can for you. You just survived a night in the Maze, I'm sure you're tired or something. If it really bothers you, you can come with me."
"Thanks, Newt," I said. "I think I'll come with you. I don't really feel like being alone right now."
We walked in silence until Newt decided to break it. "I'm really sorry about what happened before you left."
I sighed. I really didn't want to think about that. "It's fine. I'm sorry too."
"I now know how you felt." Newt said.
"What?"
"I thought I lost you last night," Newt admitted. "I couldn't do anything. I couldn't think straight. All I could think about was you and how much I missed you. Now I know how you felt when you lost Ben. I'm sorry."
I was silent for a few moments. I thought about how I thought I'd never see Newt again. Now that I was here, back in the Glade with Newt by my side, it made me think about how much I loved him and how happy I was to be alive so that I could be with him. I felt bad for ever questioning how I could love him. "I'm sorry too," I said. Then I stopped in my tracks, making Newt stop too.
"Why'd you stop-"
I interrupted Newt by pressing my lips to his. It felt like forever since we've kissed but the feeling I got was the same as always. Butterflies fluttered in my stomach and my fingers tangled themselves in Newt's hair. We pulled away and stared into each other's eyes until my stomach let out a growl, letting me (and Newt) know just how hungry I was.
"Time for food!" I said happily.
"Do you always have to ruin the moment?" Newt said jokingly.
"What do you mean, 'always'?" I asked, pretending to be shocked.
"Ugh, never mind," Newt rolled his eyes, laughing. "Let's go get you some food."
"Sounds good to me!" I laughed."This is so good!" I moaned as I took another bite of my food.
Newt rolled his eyes. "You have got to be the only person I know who acts like this because of food."
"I'm hungry!"
"Obviously," Newt said. "You're acting as if you haven't eaten for weeks."
I replied to this comment by stuffing another forkful of food into my mouth.
"The only thing I love more than you is food," I said.
"The only thing I love more than you is when you don't talk with your mouth full."
"Sorry," I said.
"Seriously, where are your manners?"
"No idea."
"That explains a lot."
"Addison, you eat more than all the Gladers combined," Frypan called over to me as I finished my third helping of whatever this was that Frypan called "food".
"You say that like its a bad thing," I said.
"Well I better get going," Newt said. "We're having a Gathering in a while."
"Alrighty, have fun," I said.
"Oh my gosh," Newt said, trying to sound annoyed but failing. "Thanks, Addison."
"You're welcome!"
And I'm just gonna publish this chapter without re-reading it cuz I'm lazy like that 😀 sorry if there's any mistakes. And hopefully y'all like this chapter. I tried to make it good since I haven't updated in so long.
