Newt's POV
"Hi Newt!" Chuck greeted me.
"Hey Chuck," I smiled at the boy. "Have you seen Addison anywhere?"
"No, but I think she went to her room."
"Okay, thank you, Chuck."
"No problem," he waved at me as I ran to Addison's room.
I took a deep breath before knocking on her door.
Addison's POV
I woke to the sound of knocking on my door. I was reluctant to get up. The person knocked again. My laziness over came me and so I just yelled, "it's open!"
The guy who walked in was the last person I had expected to see.
Newt.
"Um, hi," he said awkwardly.
I quickly jumped out of bed, combing my hair with my hands. I felt my heart beat fast. What was he doing here?
"Hi," I said.
"Can we talk?" Newt asked.
Something changed in me. All of a sudden, I felt the need to be as rude as possible to Newt. "What about?" I asked. "Don't you think we talked enough last time?"
I saw the shocked and hurt look on Newt's face. I immediately felt guilty. After all, I had just surprised myself by my words.
"Look, about that," Newt tried to continue as if nothing happened. "I'm really sorry."
"Really?" I said. "How come you didn't have Alby come to deliver your message? Remember you told me to never talk to you again?"
Newt sighed. "I know I said that, but I take it back."
"You can't just take something like that back, Newt," I said. "Come on, I thought you were smarter than that."
Newt looked at me with a hurt expression on his face. "I'm really sorry, Addison. Please forgive me. I didn't mean to get upset. I didn't mean to tell you to never talk to me again. I didn't mean any of it."
I thought for a moment. I missed Newt like crazy. But it's not like he had to know that. "Fine," I gave in. "I forgive you and I'm sorry too. If I hadn't opened my big mouth, none of this would've happened. Please forgive me, Newt."
For the first time in a while, Newt smiled. "I forgive you." Newt leaned in to kiss me but stopped.
"What?" I asked.
He smirked. "When was the last time you brushed your teeth?"
"Yesterday morning..."
"I thought so," Newt laughed. "Now go brush your teeth and while you're at it, take a shower, you adorable ball of filth."
"Newt, what the hell? 'Adorable ball of filth'?"
Newt shrugged. "I don't know. First thing that came to my mind."
I laughed. "You're such a weirdo."
"I know," he said before he patted me on the head like a dog. "Bye, love."
I stuck my tongue out at him. "Bye Newt."After my shower, I took a walk around the Glade with Thomas and Chuck.
"So, have you found a job yet, Greenie?" I asked.
"No," Thomas replied. "I'm still trying out different jobs. I want to be a Runner."
"Thomas, how many times do I have to tell you? You can't be a Runner," Chuck said.
"But Addison is a Runner," Thomas protested.
"Yeah, but I went through a lot of training before I became one. You have to work hard to prove yourself worthy of becoming a Runner," I explained.
"So?" Thomas said. "I can do that too!"
"Yeah, well, you'll have to talk to Alby or Minho," I said.
"What about Newt?" Thomas asked. "He seems like the easiest to talk to. Besides, isn't he second in command?"
"Yeah, but he isn't the one to make the final decision," Chuck explained.
"Oh," was all Thomas said.
"Well I gotta go," Chuck said.
"Bye Chuck," Thomas and I said in unison.
Once Chuck was out of earshot, I decided to ask Thomas a few questions that I'd been wondering.
"Hey Thomas?"
"Yeah?"
Did I dare? Yes, I did. "Do you remember anything before you came to the Glade?"
"What?"
"Do you remember anything from your past? Like, your life before you came to the Glade?"
"No," he said. "Am I supposed to?"
"No, we're all like that," I said. Well that went well.
There was an awkward silence before I came up with another question. "Thomas, when you came up in the Box, you said my name. Did you recognize me?"
Thomas thought for a moment. "It's actually kind of hard to explain," he said. "Besides my name, your name was the only other thing I remembered. When I saw your face, something just clicked for a second and I said your name. I didn't know that your name was actually Addison. It was just the first thing that came out when I opened my mouth."
"I see," I said. "Thomas, this might sound crazy, but I think we knew each other before coming into the Maze."
"How?"
"Because I had a dream. And you were in it. You and that other girl, Teresa," I explained as briefly as possible. "We were all friends."
"Can you keep a secret?" Thomas whispered.
"Yeah."
"I don't know why, but Teresa and I can talk telepathically."
"Really?"
"Yeah, we have been talking lately."
"Wait, isn't she in a coma?"
"Yeah, but for some reason she can still talk to me."
"Before you guys came, I heard a voice in my head," I started. "It was a female voice. It was Teresa. She warned me about the Maze. She said strange things were going to happen. Then you came and the day after Teresa arrived with that note. Things are changing and I don't know why. Nobody does."
"Should we tell someone about it?" Thomas asked.
"Tell someone about what?"
"About your dreams and our ability to talk telepathically to Teresa?"
"No! Are you crazy? We can't tell anyone!"
"Okay, okay, calm down it was just a suggestion."
"Look, Greenie," I said more aggressively than I meant to. "This is our little secret. No one can know about this, got it?"
"Got it," Thomas said.
"Good that."
"Addison!" I heard a familiar voice call out to me.
"Gotta go," I said to Thomas before sprinting over to the owner of the voice.
"Hey, love," Newt greeted me.
"Hey Newt," I smiled at him. "Did you need something?"
"Yeah, actually," Newt looked nervous for some reason. "Alby told me to tell you this."
"Tell me what?"
"Well, I really don't want to be the one to tell you, but I really have no choice."
"Tell me what?" I asked. "Come on, Newt, please tell me."
Newt just stared into my eyes for a long time. As much as I loved looking at his beautiful eyes, I was getting really impatient. "I love you," he said out of nowhere.
"And I love you too, but I don't think that's what Alby wanted you to tell me," I laughed.
"Yeah," Newt laughed nervously. "It's not."
"Come on, just tell me," I said.
"First, I just want you to know that I really don't want to tell you this and that none of it was my idea," Newt said.
"Okay," I was curious to know what was so bad that he couldn't tell me.
"Well, you see, Addison, Ben is being Banished."
I felt my heart sink. I felt the tears threatening to come. "H-how could you?" I stammered.
"I didn't want it to happen, Addison," Newt explained. "I tried to talk the Keepers out of it but they already made up their minds."
"But that's my best friend," I whispered.
I didn't know Newt heard me until he whispered back, "I know."
"When is he being Banished?"
"Tomorrow night."
"I want to say bye to him."
Newt looked at me as if he was going to protest but something in his eyes changed and he nodded his head before saying the three words that I least expected to hear. "As you wish" (if you get the reference, I love you)
I just nodded my head and started walking to my room.
"Where are you going?" Newt called after me.
"To my room," I answered, not bothering to look back.
"Are you okay?" I could tell that Newt was following me.
I turned around and looked Newt straight in the eye. "Yes, Newt, I'm fine. I would just like some time to myself if you don't mind."
Newt looked mildly surprised. "Um, okay. See you later, I guess."
I faked a smile and then walked to my room as fast as I could.
