"Rise and shine, love," I heard Newt say.
I reluctantly opened my eyes. Newt was standing in the middle of the room. I stretched and yawned.
"Come on, we don't have all day, you know," Newt said.
"I know," I replied, slowly getting out of bed.
"Please hurry up," Newt said. I could tell he was getting impatient but was trying to hide it. "I'm starving and you have not lived until you've tried Frypan's bacon."
"Hmm, bacon sounds good," I said.
"Well then, what are you waiting for?" Newt asked before heading out the door. I followed him to the kitchen where Frypan was handing out breakfast.
"Morning, Fry," Newt greeted him.
"Morning, Newt," Frypan replied. "Good morning, Addison!" He greeted me cheerfully.
"Good morning, Frypan," I said with just as much energy.
I watched as Frypan gave Newt two strips of bacon and placed an extra strip on my plate.
"How come she gets an extra strip of bacon?" Newt whined.
Apparently I wasn't the only one who noticed.
"Because she's the first girl who's ever been in the Glade and it's her second day and she had a lot to do today," Frypan answered.
"That's not fair," Newt protested. "You never give out extra bacon."
I stuck my tongue out at Newt before grabbing my plate, giving Frypan a smile and heading off to find a table.
I found an empty table and sat down. Newt had caught up with me and was now sitting across from me. I noticed him eyeing my bacon.
I decided to save it for last. Once I finished everything on my plate except for the bacon, I looked up at Newt. He quickly looked away and started picking at his food.
Frypan's bacon was actually really good. I finished one strip, savoring every bite. I closed my eyes and opened them right away when I heard someone laughing.
It was Newt.
"What's so funny?" I asked.
"You," he said. "Your face! I knew Fry's bacon was good, but I didn't realize it was that good. Your face was priceless."
He continued laughing. I just shrugged and took a bite of my second piece of bacon.
Newt looked at my plate with one last strip of bacon on it. "Are you going to eat that?" He asked.
"No."
"Can I have it?"
"No."
"Why not?"
I grinned. "Cuz." And I stuffed the bacon in my mouth.
Newt rolled his eyes and smiled. "You're such a pig."
"Why, thank you."
"Anyway, we better get started on the Tour."
"Okay."

"And this is the Bloodhouse," Newt explained as we passed by a shack surrounded by animal pens. "Hi Winston," he said to a boy with terrible acne.
"Hey Newt, Greenie," Winston waved at us.
"Winston is a Slicer," Newt told me.
"Sounds like an unpleasant job," I commented.
Winston heard my remark and said, "You get used to it."
"Whatever you say," I said. Dealing with blood and slaughtering animals didn't appeal to me.
We waved bye to Winston and I followed Newt to the edge of the forest.
"This is the Deadheads," Newt explained.
I nodded. I looked at one of the walls with an opening in the middle. I saw someone run out from it. It looked like Minho.
"What's Minho doing outside the walls?" I asked.
"Oh," Newt looked over at Minho. "His job."
"He said he was a Runner, didn't he?"
Newt nodded.
"I want to be a Runner," I said.
"What?" Newt looked surprised.
"I remember that I loved to run," I explained.
"No, you can't," Newt said.
"Why not?"
"You don't even know what's out there."
"What's out there?"
"It's too dangerous."
"What is?"
"The Maze."
"The...Maze?"
Newt nodded. "Outside those walls is a Maze."
"A Maze? Outside these walls?" I questioned.
"Yes," Newt said.
"I don't believe it."
"W-what?"
"I don't believe there's a Maze outside these walls."
"What the shuck is wrong with you?" Newt shouted. "A Greenie has never questioned what lays outside these walls!"
"Well maybe I'm different from all your other 'Greenies'," I snapped. "What if I want to be a Runner like Minho? You people are probably just trying to trick me! You're all obviously hiding something from me! Well guess what? I'm not scared of whatever you're hiding in your so-called Maze!" With that, I spun around and started running toward the opening in the wall.
"HEY!" I heard Newt yell. "Get the shuck back here, Addison!"
I didn't look back, I just kept running.
"Hey where you think you're going, Greenie?" I heard someone shout.
"You shouldn't be going out there, Greenie!" Someone else shouted.
I noticed some other boys started chasing me along with Newt. I was so close to the walls. Twenty feet. Fifteen feet. Ten feet. Five feet.
Suddenly I felt someone grab me and push me to the ground.
"Owwww," I complained loudly.
I looked up to see Gally looking down at me. "What the shuck is wrong with you, Greenie?"
"Nothing," I muttered.
"Why were you running out into the Maze?" He asked.
"Because," I answered, avoiding eye contact with Gally.
"Shucking idiot," I heard him whisper. I could tell that he meant for me not to hear it.
"Addison!" I head a familiar voice call my name.
I turned my head to see Newt running toward me.
"Are you okay, love?" He asked, kneeling down next to me.
"Yeah," I said.
"What's going on over here?" Alby asked, walking over to Newt and I.
We stood up and I brushed some grass off my pants.
"Newt, I thought you were giving Addison the Tour," Alby said sternly.
"Yeah I was," Newt held Alby's gaze but I could tell it was hard for him.
I felt so bad. Newt shouldn't have to
get in trouble for something I did. "It's my fault," I blurted out.
Both boys looked at me. "I-I ran away from Newt and tried to go out past the wall. I didn't believe him when he said that there was a Maze." I looked at the ground, ashamed of myself. All Newt had ever been to me was kind and he was just trying to protect me and I payed him back by going against him. I was such a terrible person. Such a terrible...friend. I didn't deserve to call myself Newt's friend.
"Addison," Alby said. "Do you know the last rule of the Glade?"
I shook my head.
"Well, the last rule is that you never go past those walls," Alby explained, never breaking eye contact with me.
I nodded.
"Okay, well you should go to your room," Alby said. "You can start work as a Track-Hoe tomorrow. As for your punishment for trying to go out into the Maze, you'll spend the night in the Slammer. But until it's time, you'll stay in your room."
I nodded again, tears forming in my eyes but I wouldn't let them fall.
"Come with me," Newt said. I had forgotten that he was still there.
I had no choice but to follow.
