Chapter 16

   I felt myself dozing off when I heard a knock on the door. Too lazy to get up and open it, I called out "it's open" to whoever it was on the other side.
   I looked up and saw Newt walk in. "Hey, love," he greeted me.
   "Hey, Newt," I said.
   "Sorry, did I wake you up?"
   "No, you didn't," I said.
   "Okay," Newt replied. "Minho wanted me to tell you that you'll be running with Ben tomorrow."
   "Oh, okay," I said. I understood why Minho wanted that, but it wasn't like I was ever going to tease him or act differently around him.
   "So, what happened between you and Minho in the Maze?" Newt asked, with curiosity but almost an accusing tone of voice.
   "Well," I said awkwardly. What was I supposed to tell him? Oh, nothing much, Minho just tried to kiss me but I didn't let him and now he's acting all awkward around me and I don't know how I should act now.
   "So..." Newt said.
   "Well, um."
   "Just tell me," Newt said. "I'm not going to go to Minho and tattle on you. I just want to know what happened so I can get an idea as to why Minho suddenly changed his mind. He was so excited to run with you at first but now he doesn't want to. Were you that bad?" He teased.
   "No, I think I did pretty good," I said. "He, uh, well, we were just joking around and then he, um, well you see, he tried to uh, kiss me...?"
   "What?!" Newt's eyes widened with shock.
   "Yeah..."
   "From now on, you're running with Ben and only Ben until you are experienced enough to run by yourself. I don't want you to ever step foot in that Maze if you're alone with Minho," Newt ordered.
   I didn't know what to say. Sure, Newt was second in command, but I didn't think he would totally control who I went out into the Maze with. Wasn't that up to Alby and Minho, the Keeper of the Runners?
   "Do you understand?"
   I nodded my head.
   "Good," Newt said. He got up and left without saying another word.
   "What the hell is his problem?" I muttered before closing my eyes and falling into a deep, dreamless sleep.

   Addison.
   I woke with a start. "What was that? Who said my name?" I asked aloud, even though I knew perfectly well that I was in a room with no one else in it.
   Addison, you hear me, right?
   It sounded like a female voice. How was that possible?
   "Who are you?" I asked, again, out loud.
   Addison, reply back with your mind.
   "What the shuck does that even mean?!"
   Addison, please cooperate. I know you can hear me, just try to talk back with your mind.
   "This is weird," I said. I concentrated on the voice. Talk in my mind, talk in my mind, talk in my mind, talk in my mind.
   I can hear you now, Addison!
   That's...great?
   Yeah, it actually is.
   Who are you?
   Teresa.
   "Teresa?" I said. That name was so familiar...
   Do I know you? I asked the voice in my head.
   Yes, but you don't remember me.
   Why? Where are you? Why can you talk to me like this?
   I can't answer any of those questions, but I just wanted to warn you. Be careful in the Maze.
   I will- wait, how do you know about me in the Maze?
   Never mind that, I'm trying to help you.
   Why?
   Because we used to best friends, and that's what friends do. They help each other.
   Okay.
   Addison, just please be careful in the Maze.
   I know. I've heard it all before.
   Yeah, well I know more than the boys in the Maze. Strange things are coming and you need to be careful.
   Why should I trust you?
   I just told you. We used to be friends, it wouldn't feel right if I didn't warn you.
   Fine.
   Go back to sleep. You'll need your energy tomorrow.
   Okay.
   With that, the voice stopped and I fell back asleep.
