Be Mine

Chapter 21

I spent most of the day in my room. I didn't dare going outside; I couldn't face Newt after what happened. I didn't mind staying in my room though. My running buddy was going through the Changing, the guy I love probably hates me now, and I can't stand looking at the new Greenie because he was what started this whole argument between Newt and I.
After I had cooled off a bit, I started thinking about what Newt had said. Had he really jumped off the Maze wall? That would explain his limp but how did he even get up there in the first place?
Then a horrible thought washed over me. What if Newt hadn't survived after jumping the wall? I felt tears form as I imagined my life here in the Maze without Newt.
Newt was the person I could always go to if I need something. He was the only person I could ever love. It was hard to imagine what it would be like if I had never met Newt.
   Suddenly, I heard the Greenie alarm. I thought that Greenies only came up once a month. Then I remembered. Teresa.
   Without thinking, I ran outside to the Box. Many of the Gladers were already surrounding the Box. I saw Newt looking down at the Greenie. "It's a girl!" He called out.
   "A girl?" A Glader said.
   "What the shuck is another girl doing here?" Another Glader asked.
   "I call dibs!" One shuck face shouted.
   I saw Thomas staring down at the girl. I wonder if he recognizes her.
   I heard Alby ask Thomas if he knew her.
   "I don't know her," he said.
Never mind, I thought. He doesn't recognize her.
I heard the girl's voice, only she sounded almost as if she were possessed. "Everything is going to change."
"What does that even mean?" I heard someone ask.
"She's holding a note!" Newt announced.
"Read it," Alby ordered.
"She's the last one...ever," Newt said.
"What does that even mean?" The same voice from earlier asked.
"We don't know!" Alby answered, annoyed. "Everyone back to work. Jeff! Clint! Take care of the girl! Newt, I need to talk to you."
Everyone left, leaving me standing alone next to the Box. Well, almost alone.
"Hey, Addison, right?" Thomas asked.
I nodded my head.
"What do you think this was all about?" He asked.
"Are you serious?" I asked in disbelief. "Do you think it's normal for a girl to just pop up here half dead and say something about how everything is going to change? There's a reason why I was the only girl here! We just don't know it yet. And now there's another girl. Something obviously isn't right! I thought you'd be smarter than that!"
Thomas looked surprised. "I'm sorry."
I took a deep breath, trying to control myself. I shouldn't take all my anger out on the poor guy. "It's fine. I should be the one apologizing anyway. I'm sorry."
"It's fine."
"So did that girl look familiar to you?"
"Nope."
I eyes him suspiciously. "Are you sure?"
He stared off into space for a few moments before answering. "Well, when I saw her, I felt as though I'd seen her before. I just don't know where or why. But it might have just been my imagination. This place is enough to make a person crazy."
I thought of my argument with Newt. "You got that right."
   There was an awkward silence when all of a sudden we heard a scream. Poor Ben, I thought.
   "What was that?" Thomas asked.
   I wasn't sure if he had already been given the Tour or not so I decided to play it safe. "Nothing."
   "Why is that all you ever say?" Thomas said. "Not just you, everyone here! Don't you guys know how to answer a question?!"
   "Sorry, Tom," I said. "But it's for your own good."
   Thomas looked annoyed. "Well if you're not gonna tell me, I'll figure it out myself."
   "I wouldn't do that if I were you."
   Thomas started toward the sound of the screaming. But in his way was Gally.
   Well shuck, I'm screwed, I thought. But I decided not to run after him. After all, I'm sure Gally would stop him.
   I started walking. I'm not sure where I was going. I let my feet guide me as my thoughts moved from Thomas to Newt to the Glade in general.
   I didn't even notice that I had climbed up a tree in the Deadheads. I sighed. At least I could get some time alone to clear my head.
