BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!
The alarm on my cell-phone went off. Today is the first day of school, and I'm finally a senior. I moaned, but I slowly got up and stretched. I got ready and left the house.
When I arrived, I picked up my schedule and looked around. I spotted my friends sitting down at a table, so I headed in their direction.
Ashton Baker, my best friend, had her short black hair in a ponytail. Her big brown eyes were sparkling. We met at the beginning of seventh grade, and we've been good friends for five years.
John Conner is also a good friend of mine. We've known each other since sixth grade. He's awkward, but he knows how to listen. He has a big crush on me, too, but I made it clear that I didn't think of him that way.
Lucas Carmillo is a big brother to me. We're childhood friends, and we were inseparable. We would be together day and night. Whenever I felt sad, he would do his best to make me smile.
I greeted everyone and hurried to my class. I sat down in the very front of the room and took out my notebook. As I waited for the teacher, a handsome boy walked in. His blonde hair and green eyes were absolutely perfect. My heart started to beat faster, but I looked away. The teacher came in and we started class.
Boy, he's good-looking, I thought. I'm not looking for a relationship, though. What am I even thinking? I doubt he would even like me.
It was lunch time, so I sat down at an empty table. While I munched on a snack, I started reading a book. I couldn't concentrate very well because I kept thinking about the boy. He's been in all my classes, but this is the first time I've seen him. His name is Nathaniel Marchant. Suddenly, I felt arms being wrapped around me.
"Hello, Lucie Oakly."
The voice was familiar, so I turned around. Lucas was standing there, flashing his gorgeous smile.
"Hi, Lucas."
I smiled and patted the seat next to me.
"Are you eating lunch by yourself?" he asked.
"Well, I guess. I was just reading a book," I answered.
He sat down next to me and placed a white box on the table. He removed the lid and revealed decorated sweets.
"What's that?" I asked.
"I bought you some cakes at your favorite bakery. I know you don't usually eat anything, so I wanted to get something for you."
His thoughtfulness made me blush.
"Thank you, Lucas."
Without reason, he began to braid my long black hair. When we were younger, I taught him how to because I couldn't do it myself. We chatted and ate the cakes together. When the bell rang, we walked to our next class.
Lucas took the seat behind me and started conversing with his friends. The door opened and a recognizable boy walked in. He scanned the classroom for an empty chair, but then glared at me. I was confused, so I looked away. The boy ended up sitting next to me. Lucas tapped my shoulder, and I turned around.
"Are you okay?" he asked.
"I'm fine," I responded.
"Do you know him?"
"Not exactly," I whispered, "but we have the same classes."
"What's his name?"
"His name's Nathaniel," I said.
Lucas nodded and returned to what he was doing.
After school, I sat down under a tree. I began to read my book, but someone caught my eye. Nathaniel was standing nonchalantly against a wall, but our eyes suddenly met.
What's his problem? First, he glared at me in class. Second, he's staring at me. He's cute, but he sure does have a weird attitude.
I looked away and saw students taping posters, so I stood up to go check it out.
A poster read:
Little Sister Day! Girls will be asking the boys to be a part of a contest. The winners will receive a prize! Dress up as an adorable, little girl tomorrow!
There were drawings of little sisters and big brothers. It seemed like it was drawn by children, too. I smiled at how pleasant it looked.
Wow, I thought, they already have an event planned on the second day of school. The girls have to ask the boys to be their big brothers. There's going to be a contest, too. I should ask Lucas.
I gathered my belongings and drove home.
