"Do you ever wish I was more like him?" I asked in a moment of uncharacteristic bravery.
She looked hazed and blinked several times before meeting my gaze.
"No, of course not," she answered.
Lucie was never a good liar, and the bewildered expression she wore told me everything I needed to know.
"You do," I challenged.
"Why would you ask such a thing?" she retorted.
"Because," I hesitated, "because I need to know if you'll ever accept me for who and what I am. I need to trust you; I need to trust that you don't compare me to him every time your fingers are locked with mine and our breaths are mixed."
She lowered her eyes to the floor.
"I love you. I do," she said, but it sounded like she was trying to reassure herself.
Two months later, when he waltzed back into her life and begged her for a second chance, she sprinted to his side, barely giving me a second glance.
