"Look at how many toys they have, Aunt Lucie!" Thomas laughed.
"Thomas, don't run off too far!" Nathaniel called out.
We drove to Joyland. I giggled at how protective Nathaniel got when it came to Thomas. Seeing Nathaniel act so fatherly made me happy.
After going on multiple rides and seeing most of the attractions, we took a restroom break. Thomas wanted to go in by himself, so Nathaniel and I waited outside.
"You'll be a great father," I complimented.
"What are you talking about?" he asked.
"The way you interact with Thomas is so sweet and careful."
"Of course," he whispered, frowning at the floor.
"Is something wrong?"
Nathaniel paused before speaking.
"I have a younger brother. His name's Mike, and he's five."
That came out of nowhere.
"Oh, really? He's younger than Thomas. How come he doesn't live with you?"
"My parents won't let me take him. They don't think I'm capable of taking care of him."
"Well, their judgement is wrong."
"I guess. I just wish I can see him. I really miss him."
Nathaniel's voice cracked. I felt the pain in his tone even though I've never gone through it.
I really want to help him. Seeing him like this makes me worry.
"Where is Mike?"
"He doesn't live in this town. I moved here from Boston, so you'd assume that he's there."
"You lived in Boston?"
"I was born there."
I've always wanted to go to Boston, but I can't just pick up my bags and fly there. I need an excuse to leave. I want to find Mike for Nathaniel. I have to do something.
"Aunt Lucie! Let's go!" Thomas called.
"I'm coming!" I yelled.
We spent the rest of the day at Joyland. Pictures were taken, rides were ridden, and attractions were seen. Thomas fell asleep on the way home, but he had a great time.
When we arrived, I tucked Thomas into bed and kissed his forehead. He was sleeping soundly, and I quietly shut the door behind me.
"Shall we go to bed?" Nathaniel asked.
"Don't talk like that," I laughed.
He smirked and said, "Okay, then. Come on, I'm tired."
He nudged me towards the bedroom, but I stopped him.
"Uh, what's up?" he asked.
