Eyes were locked onto me when I arrived to school the next day. Though I continued to smile, it was hard for me to walk around campus. I paced towards my locker and found Lucas standing in front of it.
"We need to talk," he stated.
"Excuse me? We have nothing to talk about," I protested.
Lucas sighed and began to walk away.
Lying to me hurts, Lucas, but it's even worse when you don't try to fix it. How could you be so selfish?
My chest felt heavy, but I grabbed my books and headed towards my class.
When it was lunch time, I bought food and sat down at an unoccupied table. As expected, Lucas appeared and sat across from me.
"I am truly sorry," he began.
He placed his hand over mine. I wanted to pull away, but my body refused.
"I love you, okay? I lied because I couldn't see you with someone else, and it was crushing me."
"Do you lie to the people you love?" I interrogated.
"When it's necessary, yes."
I yanked my hand away, appalled at his response, but he continued.
"Why are you paying so much attention to Nathaniel?" he inquired.
"If you want attention, go talk to Melody! She has feelings for you, you know?"
"Melody isn't the girl I want to be with, Lucie!"
I ended the conversation and joined Ashton and John. Ashton invited me to go shopping with her, so I accepted.
After school, we drove to a store and tried on clothes. Ashton was changing into a bikini, but I decided to try on a dress.
"John looked so cute today! I tried asking him who he liked, but he just won't budge!"
"Why don't you just tell him how you feel?" I suggested.
"What if he doesn't feel the same way?"
Her tone sounded sad.
"If he doesn't, wouldn't that be a good opportunity to move on?"
"Sure, but I've liked him for a really long time," she admitted.
If I spoke to John, I would be forcing his feelings. I couldn't do that to him, but I wish that he would pay more attention to Ashton.
"Do you want to buy something to drink, Ash?" I asked.
"Huh? Sure!"
When we finished shopping, we drove to a café. I immediately sat down and allowed Ashton to order our drinks. While she ordered, I took out my cell-phone and messaged Nathaniel. A moment later, Ashton took a seat next to me.
"Someone's staring at you," she said.
I neglected the topic and continued to browse through my cell-phone.
She elbowed me and whispered, "He's coming this way."
Vexed, I looked up. The stranger grabbed a chair and sat beside me. He winked, but I turned away.
"Are you two lonely? My friend and I didn't want to leave beautiful ladies unaccompanied."
Ashton giggled and began to chat with the stranger, but I remained uninterested. He seemed bored, too, so he told his friend to come sit with us.
"There's going to be a party tonight, so you should come."
"Sure! We would love to go!" Ashton answered.
