I felt dizzy. I dropped the knife and fell onto my knees. Nathaniel came back inside and closed the door. He was mouthing words, but my ears refused to hear anything. I saw Thomas creep out from the bedroom with a worried look on his precious face. I looked at him, and then my vision went dark.
A white light shined brightly when I opened my eyes. I was exhausted and my body felt paralyzed. I tried to move, but I only twitched slightly.
"Aunt Lucie?" I heard a voice say.
Thomas?
"Uncle Nathaniel, I think she's awake."
"I think she's awake, too."
Their voices... They sound so distant, but they're so close to me.
"It's time to wake up." Nathaniel said.
In an instant, I jolted up and breathed heavily.
"Relax, Lucie. Everything is fine."
Nathaniel sat beside me and placed my head on his shoulder. He gently patted my head. My breathing became calm again and my heart stopped pounding.
"I'm so sorry, Nathaniel. I didn't mean for it to come to this," I said, tearing up.
"It's okay. You were really upset. That's understandable."
"W-Where are we?"
"The hospital."
"Why?"
"You passed out. When I was carrying you to the couch, you felt hot. I took your temperature and you were really overheating. I panicked and brought you here."
"T-Thomas?" I called.
"Yes?"
Thomas climbed onto the bed, and I pulled him into a tight hug.
"A-Aunt Lucie! I can't breathe!"
"I'm never letting you go, Thomas! I will never let anyone take you away from me!" I cried.
"I want to stay with you forever, too," he whispered, returning my embrace.
"I'll go talk to the doctor, okay? We'll be out of here in no time," Nathaniel said, leaving the room.
I smiled. When Thomas and I parted, I looked down.
"Aunt Lucie?"
"Yes, Thomas?"
"Is it okay for me to call you 'Mommy' and Uncle Nathaniel 'Daddy'?" he asked.
I was surprised with such a request.
"I'm okay with it, but you should ask Nathaniel as well."
"Okay!" he smiled.
Thomas smiled and nuzzled into my chest. I held him and kissed his forehead.
