On my way to the hospital I couldn't get what happened out of my mind. It was a nightmare. And all my fault too. Beside me in Mr. Matthews car was Maya and Bradon, Lucas in the passenger seat. We were all in shock. Mr. Matthews was on the phone with Topanga.
When we arrived at the hospital they already had Riley in the E.R trying to figure out what was wrong with her. Mr. Matthews went to the back in search for Riley, while the rest of us took a seat.
Nothing but silence. Until a doctor with a clipboard approached us.
“Cory Matthews, father of Riley Matthews, told me you all were there to witness what happened to Riley. I would like to know what happened, so I can get a better understanding of Riley's condition.” The doctor said to us.
“What do you mean condition? What's wrong with her?” Maya asked, her face full of worry.
Lucas chimed in with “Brandon probably gave her brain damage. After all, he yanked her off the stairs.”
“I did not, Friar! She tripped as I was trying to get her down.” Brandon said defensively.
“Sure, just tell yourself that if it'll help you sleep at night.” Lucas scoffed.
Brandon turned to Maya and asked “You believe me, right? You know I wouldn't hurt Riley.”
Maya opened her mouth, but before words could come out Mr. Matthews came back and said “Maya, please come with me. She wants to see you.”
Maya apologized to the doctor, and left with Mr. Matthews to the back of the E.R.
“And what's your input in all of this?” The doctor asked me.
I looked at him dumbfounded. I knew what I was going to say, but no words could escape my mouth. “Um..uh..” I finally said. Great going, Farkle.
“I'm going to need a little bit more than that. ”
“This was all truly my fault. I was so caught up in trying to fight Lucas, and Riley was just trying to stop it.” Hot tears burned my eyes, but I didn't dare let them slip. “Brandon was just helping her get out of the way and she tripped.”
“Farkle! You know Brandon did this.” Lucas yelled at me.
“I am shocked you would accuse me of such a thing, Lucas! This was all an accident. Maybe if you weren't trying to prove yourself to everyone then you'd know what really happened.”
“You've done it now, Rebel. You should have been the one I was fighting instead of Farkle.”
I could feel the tension in the room, and I guess I wasn't the only one, because the doctor asked them both to take their argument outside.
After they both left, the doctor asked if there was anything else I could tell him. I shook my head, but I did ask “When can I see her?”
The doctor replied “I can take you back there now if you want.”
I nodded and we walked into the back of the E.R. We walked down a few halls and he pointed at a brown door. “You'll find her in that room. I'll catch up you later, I have other patients to see.”
“May I ask though, what's going on with Riley?”
The doctor responded with “There are a few knots on her head, but those will heal. Riley is very lucky. If she hadn't landed the way she did then she might not be with us right now.”
I nodded and let the doctor go see his other patients. I slowly walked to the door. It was shut, but I could hear Maya and Mr. Matthews talking.
“When do you think Riles will be able to leave?” Maya asked.
Mr. Matthews responded with “No clue, but it might be a day or two.”
I walked to the window that was beside the door. You could see inside Riley's room. Both Maya and Mr. Matthews were standing in front of the door. I looked at Riley, who was lying in the rock hard hospital bed. She looked calm, but in pain at the same time. Madness this was and I am the blame for it all. Stupid, stupid, stupid me.
“I've done enough damage for one day” I thought.
Instead of walking into the room, I left. On my way out, I ran into Brandon and Lucas. “She's in Room 93. First floor.” I told them, before walking out of the hospital.
