"Maya, wait up!!" I ran faster towards Maya as she was getting on the subway.
I hopped onto the subway and sat down beside her. "What has gotten into you all of a sudden?" I asked her but she didn't answer. Instead she pulled out her phone and was texting someone."Who is that you're texting?" I asked after a few minutes.
Maya looked at me and smiled. "No one." she replied as she closed her phone. I began to get confused. Maya has been really secretive and too cheery this morning.
"This is our stop. You ready for 8th grade, Riley?" Maya asked for the second time this morning.
I nodded my head as we both stepped off the subway together and into the school.
I hadn't been into that school for months and now as I was walking to my homeroom and we passed the staircase. My head began to hurt as the memories started coming back.Falling down...down...down...
"You okay Riles?" Maya was watching me. I guess I was staring into space again.
"Yeah, I'm okay." I took Maya's arm and started skipping into class with her.
The school tardy bell had rang just as Maya and I sat down at our desks. The teacher, also known as my dad, started scribiling words onto the chalkboard.
My dad start his introduction with "Okay class, we're going to begin the first da-"
but he was cut off by a late student walking into the class. As the student walked in we all stared at him. "Mr.Friar? Why are you late, are you not aware of when school starts?" My dad asked.
Lucas rolled his eyes at him. "Sir, I am aware of when school starts. Do I care? Not really."
"Well, you just got detention on your first day back, Friar. Now go have a seat."
Lucas walked slowly to his desk and he glanced at me. I looked away. Lucas looked so different now, he was more muscular and the blue T-shirt he chose to wear today showed it off. He also wore jet black skinny jeans and blue jordons.
I looked down at what I chose to wear today. I wore a blue knee dress, white knee high socks, brown boots and a long key necklace. My style didn't change over the summer. Nothing changed during the summer with me.
I looked at Maya, her style changed. She had more edge then last year. Maya wore a studded jacket over a black tank top with a pair of jeans and studded-heel boots.
"Yes, Mr.Minkus. What is the answer?" Mr.Matthews called on Farkle to answer the question he just asked. I would have answered it, but I was not paying attention and do not know what he asked.
I didn't dare look at Farkle. I couldn't, not after what happened last year. He was the reason for those dreams, the reason I have the dreadful memories. He was the reason why I am not friends with him anymore, the reason why I am not friends with Lucas anymore. He is the reason why Lucas turned into the "I don't care about anything " boy. Farkle Minkus. The smartest person I know that made some really bad decisions.
"Riles? Earth to Riley. Snap out of daydream world." I snapped back into reality, I didn't know I was daydreaming
"Er, yes sir?" I looked up at my dad. He had his arm crossed and was standing in front of me.
"I asked you four times why Mr.Minkus's answer was correct."
"I wasn't paying attention. Could you repeat his answer please?"
He shook his head. "No, I can not. I hate to do this but you are getting detention. I can't have my students not paying attention in class." Cory started writing on a pink slip. "I will see Mr.Friar and you in detention this afternoon. " he said and handed us the slips as the bell rang.
