I watched as my best friend got shot.

"Uriah!" I cried out and ran towards him as he slumped to the ground, but Tris started to pull me away.

"We have to get out of here!" She shouted and I nodded, tears rolling down my face. We ran across the roof as there were shots being fired left, right and centre.

"Get in!" I shouted and pushed her inside the doors. I quickly shut them behind me and locked it over, then I almost got hit by some bullets flying through the doors.

"Run!" I shouted and we raced down the stairs until people started to scream and people started to fall around us. There were men, woman and children all dressed in white who looked tired yet very scared. I looked behind me and saw that the people shooting at us were Dauntless-Erudite.

I think it was a big mistake to turn around because next thing I know, there is a shooting pain going through my arm and I'm on the ground immediately and unconscious.

.

My eyes fluttered open and I looked at my surroundings. I was lying at the bottom of a staircase with a lot of, what looked to be, dead people. I stood up from my spot on the ground and tiptoed over to the top of the stairs. I peeked down and saw that Tris was slowly rising and I sighed in relief.

"Thank God." I whispered and slowly made my way over the people to get to Tris.

"It's some kind of transmitter to determine the Divergent from the others." I whispered to her and she nodded.

"Mummy." I heard a voice say. I turned around and saw a little girl walking towards us.

"They got my mummy." She said and pointed to the transmitter on her chest.

"Look we got one too." I said and pointed to my arm and Tris turned to show the girl her back.

"It's just the thing that made everybody go to sleep." Tris said to the girl.

"I need you to do me a favour, I need you to go to the top of those stairs up there and don't come down until your mummy comes to get you." Tris said and she nodded.

"Don't come down." The girl said.

"Don't come down. Be brave okay?" Tris said as she stroked the girls cheek, then she ran off.

Tris and I immediately took off for the stairs to go down and see what was going. We got to the bottom then slowly slid through the doors. I heard screams and I saw some Dauntless shooting at the Candor people. Tris and I walked through the common area and towards the weapons armoury. We got there then saw that the gate was locked. I heard footsteps behind me so I turned quickly but saw it was Uriah. I ran towards him and hugged him tightly.

"I thought you were dead." I whispered and he chuckled quietly.

"Nope I'm right here." He said quietly and I laughed quietly.

"Hey." Tris said to him.

"Why are we the only ones awake?" Uriah asked slowly.

"Because we're Divergent." I said.

"C'mon we have to open this. Uriah I need your help." Tris said so Uriah and I jogged over to help her open the door.  Uriah grabbed a fire extinguisher and began to smash it against the metal door.

"Hey!" A voice shouted behind us. I immediately recognised that voice as Eric, so I turned around slowly and saw that behind him was Max and a bunch of other soldiers.

"Look who decided to show up." He said and I had to contain my smile. I kept a straight face and acted as if I didn't want to see him. He walked up close to me.
