“Have you discussed this with your husband Mrs. Malik?”

“No.  I will be telling him of my decision later today.”

“You understand that without even the slightest radiation your tumor will grow at an alarming rate and you will have even less time.”

“I understand.” Emma put her head down and sighed.  

She had come to a decision of not receiving any further radiation treatments.  

She wanted her last days to be happy.  Not ones filled with being sick constantly.  And that is what had been happening of late.  

She would literally crawl to the bathroom at night because her legs were so weak, she could hardly walk any more.  

And then she would hang her head in the toilet to throw up.  

Zayn would find her there when he realized she wasn’t in bed with him.  

“How much longer?” she asked looking back up at Dr. Thomas.

“I won’t give you an actual time frame Mrs. Malik, let’s just say it won’t be long.”

Emma pushed her wheelchair back from his desk.  Even the shortest distances tired her easily.  

Dr. Thomas got up to push her.

“Thank you Dr. Thomas.  For everything.” Emma said over her shoulder.

“You’re welcome.  I just wish there was more I could do.” He said gently placing a hand on her shoulder.  He pushed her out to the waiting room where Beth was waiting to take her home.

Emma wasn’t eating.  She had no appetite.  She had lost so much weight.  

Zayn watched her over his glass at the table.  She was pushing the food around her plate.

“Aren’t you hungry?” he asked.

“No, I’m not.”  

Zayn looked over at Beth and Niall who had also been watching her.  

“I’m just very tired.”  

Concern was on everyone’s face.  What had happened at the doctors? 

Emma hadn’t said anything to anyone yet.  Not even on the ride home with Beth.

“Em, do you want something else? I can make you…” Beth blurted out.

“No.  I’m not hungry.” She snapped.  

Beth was hurt by her remark.  But she knew Emma didn’t mean it how she had said it.  

Emma realized it herself and looked over at her sister.  “I’m sorry Bethy.  I didn't mean to snap at you.”

“I know.”  They smiled at each other.  

Emma looked over at her husband who was still watching her.

“Will you push me out by the pool please? I need to talk to you.”  

“Sure.” Zayn said quietly.  He felt his heart sink to his stomach.

Niall and Beth watched as Zayn slowly pushed Emma out to the pool area.  Both of them wondering what was going to be said.

Zayn pushed Emma to one of the patio tables and pulled up a chair next to her.  Taking her hand in his he grasped it tightly.  

He looked at her as she gazed out over the water and the light reflecting off of it.

“Love?”

“I’m not going to have any more radiation treatments.” She said.

“Why? They’ve been helping, even if only a little bit.  They are buying us more time to..”

“I can’t do it anymore.  I’m tired.  I’m so sick and tired of being sick and tired.” She said.  Tears filling her eyes.  She turned to look at him.  

She raised her hand to caress his cheek.  She caught a tear fall from his eye on her thumb.

“Em, I..”

“Zayn.  I want to be with you forever.  But we both know it isn’t possible.  I’m scared.”

He pulled her into his arms and held her tight as they both cried.  Neither wanting to let go of the other.

“How long?” he asked.

“Dr. Thomas wouldn’t give me a time frame.  He said it wouldn’t be too much longer though.”

“I love you so much.”  Zayn said as his tears continued to fall.
