Baby Blues_Chapter 56

Zayn looked at the clock.  It was just after five in the evening.

Even though Brighton was sometimes warm.  At this time of the year, it was cool with the breezes off of the ocean.

Zayn had set up a blanket on the beach and went back to the house to get Emma.

It seemed as if his whole world was ending.  Somehow she knew it was time.

But Zayn wasn’t ready to say goodbye.  He would never be ready.

She was half sitting, half lying on the couch when he walked through the screen door.

She had her head uncovered.  Her hair had all fallen out with the radiation treatments.

But to Zayn, she was still the most beautiful woman in the world.

“Hi beautiful.” He said to her as he walked towards her.

She smiled at him.  Weakly.

“Are you ready?” he asked. And she nodded yes.

Zayn bent down and picked her up in his arms.  She weighed practically nothing and he held her close to him.

He kept kissing her as he carried her to the blanket.  He sat down and gently placed her between his legs and held her tight.

He could feel her body relax against his.  For the first time in a long time.

They both looked out at the water.  The sun was just beginning to set in the west.  Casting an orange glow across the water.

“Talk to me.” She said.  Her voice a whisper.

Zayn reached out and took her hands in his.

“Do you remember the first date we had? When we went to Antonio's.  When I held you in my arms and we danced.  You didn’t want me to ask you out but you knew I would.  Then after we walked along this beach.  You let me hold your hand.  But you still held back.  Unsure of us.”

Zayn sighed and pulled her closer.

“Do you remember when I told you again that I loved you? You were in the kitchen making us dinner and I couldn’t hold it in any longer.  And after I told you, you took off running down this same beach.  And remember that I caught you, and I’ve never let go.  Not for a second.”

He looked down and saw Emma looking out onto the water.  A smile on her face.

“Remember when I proposed to you? Out on the pier.   I had your ring the day you left Harry.”

Emma turned her head slightly.  Not believing him.  “You did?” she asked.

“I sure did.  I didn’t want to lose you.  And when you left, I thought my heart was breaking in two.  But then we found each other again.  I thought you were going to jump into the water when I asked you to marry me.  But you surprised me by not doing that.  Putting that ring on your finger made me the happiest man in the world.”

Zayn looked down at her left hand.  Now void of her wedding rings because her hands were so thin, they kept falling off.

“And our wedding.  You were so beautiful.  Harry helping you off of that black horse.  I still couldn’t believe you were mine.  I was so afraid you would get back on that horse and ride away.”

Emma turned her body in towards Zayn’s and he held on tighter.

The sun was setting and he was silent for a while.

Emma seemed to shiver and Zayn pulled the blanket around her tighter.

“Zayn.”

He looked down at her.  “What is it love?”

“I love you.  More than life itself.”  She tried to continue at that moment, but her mouth was very dry and it was hard to speak.

“Shh…don’t talk.  It’s okay.”

She shook her head and continued.  “Tell my babies that I love them.  Be happy Zayn.  For me?”

Zayn didn’t even attempt to stop the tears coming from his eyes.  “Yes baby.  For you.”

Emma smiled and touched his face with her hand.  He bent down and brushed her lips with his.

As he pulled away, Emma’s eyes began to close.

Zayn started to panic.

He wasn’t ready.

It wasn’t time.

He gently shook her.

“Baby? Em?” she didn’t respond.

Her head fell to the side and Zayn placed a hand in front of her nose.  She wasn’t breathing.

“No!” Zayn yelled and pulled her into him.

He was sobbing and began to rock back and forth.  Kissing her.

“Oh God Emma, please don’t do this to me.  I need you.  Oh God.”

Louis and Yaser watched from the patio deck.  They too were crying and both knew that Emma was gone.

Yaser had called Louis and Eleanor the day before and they were in Brighton that afternoon.

They knew that Zayn would need his friends now more than ever.

“Should we go down there?” Louis asked.

“No.  Let’s give him some time yet.”

“Okay.”  Louis was distraught.  “I’ll go call the house and let everyone know.”

“Sounds good.  Just tell them we’ll call the funeral home.”

Louis went into the house and made the dreaded phone call.

Yaser watched his son pour out his grief.  He himself was unable to hold back his own tears.

Louis reappeared a short time later.

“Who did you talk to?”

“Niall.  He was going to tell everyone.”

“Sounds good.”

They could hear Zayn’s voice from the beach.

He was singing.  Trying to sing between sobs.

Louis began to walk towards him.

Zayn jumped when he felt a hand on his shoulder.

“Zayn?”

“Go away Lou.”

“There’s nothing more you can do.  She’s gone.”

“No she’s not!” he yelled at him.  “I’ll never let her go!”

Louis sighed.  “I know Zayn.  I know.”
