Chapter 8: The Proposal & My Obnoxious Fiancé!
"The meeting of two personalities is like the contact of two chemical substances: if there is any reaction, both are transformed."
- Carl Jung
Mother stood next to me and took my unoccupied hand. "Evelyn. I have time and time again, thought about this day since you were born. You have changed in a blink of an eye. From the sweet innocent child you once where, to the independent lady I know you will become, it has been a blessing to see you grow. I hope you make me proud, by proving yourself capable of taking care of your husband and being there with him through thick and thin."
Her word stung me a little, when she called me and independent lady. It was a slap to my face, standing here next to Matthew. I needed some prescription pills to endure what was about to happen to me. Way to go Mom! God you give me tumors. Mother could not talk anymore as she burst into tears earning sympathy from the crowd. Please! I thought rolling my eyes. My father stepped in to take her place. "Thank you all for coming today, on this joyful occasion. It pains me to see one of my very own daughters leave the nest, but it also gives me great happiness knowing she is in good hands with the fine gentleman next to her. Many of you have come from across the country to see these two get engaged, and they will not disappoint you any longer."
Father went and put his hand on Matthew's shoulder squeezing it tightly enough for only us to notice. "Son, please take care of my precious daughter. I leave her in your hands now."
Matthew smiled at him, "Thank you Mr. Reed. I promise to take care of your daughter and love her unconditionally." What a liar! You're a liar Matthew McClaire! He turned around getting on one knee. The crowd became silent as he reached for his pocket, taking out a black little box. I covered my mouth with my hands, trying not to look to disturbed about what was about to happen, while still trying to hold in the vomit that was slowly creeping up. Small flashes of light illuminated next to us as he opened the box. Inside the black box stood a 2-stone diamonds accompanied by a big 1 stone Rudy in the middle. Its silver band was crossed hatched as it wove all the way around, embedded in the band where small diamonds. I knew how much this ring was worth, with insurance included, but couldn't fathom why I didn't at least find it intriguing. Ehh, Its okay
"Evelyn Samantha Reed will you give me the pleasure of accepting this ring and marrying me?" His green eyes sparked teasingly against the outdoor lighting.
I turned my head away from the crowd and scoffed, "No."
Mother, who was still next to me, heard me and placed a firm hand around my shoulder. I winced when her nails jab into my skin. The crowd swayed gleefully at imprecise actions of my mother's gesture toward me, as I teared up from the physical pain. Mother fu-I looked passed him and answered somberly. "Yes, I do."
People began to clap and joyful cheers erupted around us. Couples were standing next to each other as they gently embraced one another. The small girls around me had their eyes sparkling with delight, as the boys turned away sticking out their tongue in disgust. My sisters were in the front accepting hugs and congratulations from people. Violet and Ace were smiling at me. I looked around to find Logan turning away as he shook his head and entered the house. A joyous cry erupted from behind me as my mother hugged me, muffling her happiness into my shoulder. After what seem like hours she finally pulled away, leaving her hand to rest on my cheek. "My baby girl is growing up." She chocked.
Father put an arm around her shoulder and smiled. We locked eyes not saying a word, but hiding so much more than we should. I was officially engaged, and he had his assurance I would not fail on my end of the agreement. There was relieved in his eyes to see that would no longer have to worry. He cleared his throat, nodding. "Congratulations, to the both of you."
