Chapter 10: Summer Fun & Lovely Burns!

"Ah, Summer what power you have to make us suffer and like it."

-Russell Baker.

It had been two month since Matthew had come to live with us. Two months since I was introduced to hell on earth. Although the time I spend with him was minimized to dinning and the occasional passing by, I was still suck in this house. Only a couple of text messages from Logan came, asking what I was doing. He didn't have much time to hang out since he was preparing to take over his father's business, but when he did he'd make sure to take me out of the hellish place. My friends were returning this weekend from their long over-due bonding time with me. This left me in between a place of anticipation and boredom.

I groan turning away from the TV screen. The weather channel had reported hot and windy today. Those two were never favorites in my book, guess that's what you get for living in California. Sipping on some good old classic fresh squeezed lemonade, I went searching for Violet who I found at the pool.

She was currently swimming underwater, her blue towel laid next to a beach ball she had brought out. Having not enough energy to hit her with the ball in this heat, I sat down and sank my feet into the pool. It instantly soothed my heated skin. My legs paddled, sending ripples across the pool. Violet swam up next me, resting her arms against the pool. "Who are you texting?"

"Logan. He's asking what I'm doing." I was about to put down my phone when it buzzed again. I smiled at his text and looked at Violet. "Apparently he's going to come over."

"Cool, so I'm guessing he's free again."

"Guess so?"

Violet pulled away and started to float backwards. "Are you coming in? Or are you going to burn like toast." I looked at my skin. The myth about people with tan skin not getting sun burn, false. Sure enough I was toasting away. It happened to me once. About two years ago, fell asleep in the pool with my back to the sun. My skin turned blackish purple. Not a pretty weekend.

"Fine, I'll go get changed." I said remembering.

I went in the house and changed in to my bathing suit. It was black tankini that had cherry blossoms on the side, with matching boy shorts. Not something glamorous like my mother's $290 dollar bikini, but was comfortable. Content with what I was wearing I headed outside with a towel in hand.

Violet was doing laps around the pool, when I came back. The cold water was called me in. I sat my towel down on a table and slipped off my sandals. Calculating the distance to the pool, I took a few steps back, got my adrenaline pumping and ran at full speed. Violet had stopped short from where I was and cringed her head to the side. My body molded into a cannonball and was soon engulfed in the cool water. A few laps around the pool was enough to subdue the slight shivers that were racking through my body.

I lifted myself up to float next to Violet, who was lightly humming away. "It's times like these I love what Mother Nature and human inventing offers to us."

"Yup, but I'd rather be at the beach."

"Not, me. I prefer not to have sand in my ass or boobs." Violet just laughed. We floated there quietly for a while looking at the scattered clouds hanging over our heads. A serene peace, that was cut short when a loud cry erupted from outside the pool. Our heads perched up at the sound. Logan had managed to enter the pool area unnoticed and was now flying at us at full speed. My yelling was muffled as a tide wave of water washed over me. I rolled my eyes, when a blond blur passed beneath me and grabbed a hold of my legs. He dragged me down the water and smiled as bubbles escaped from his nostrils. A wicked grin escaped my lips, when I kicked free of him.
