School.
That was the first thing that drifted through her mind as her alarm went off.
Damn.
That was the second thing that drifted through her mind.
"Kat, can you please turn off that damned clock?"
Wait. Who was that?
Katalina sat up, peering around the room. Someone pounded on the door of her room, causing Katalina to jump. Switching off her alarm, she grabbed a base-ball out of her closet and opened the door. She swung. It hit the wall.
"Damn-it, Kat! What the hell is up your fucking ass?" James screamed, ducking. Katalina sighed from relief.
"Sorry, I forgot that you stayed the night. After years of being alone in an empty house you get used to it. Old habits die hard."
"So every morning you wake up, take a base-ball bat, and swing as you open the door?" James said.
Katalina growled. "Bite me, asshole."
James gave her a hug and rubbed her hair like a five-year old. "Aw, it feels like nothings changed."
Katalina stiffened. Things HAD changed. And despite all of his questions, Katalina had still neglected to mention where her Mom was or that she was fine.
Katalina never got calls from her Mother. Maybe once a couple of days. When Katalina had asked why she never came home, her Mother replied. "I dont think of this place as a home, dear. I think of it as a prison full of horrible memories."
Katalina had nodded then, finally deciding that her mother was not worth her time and pain. If Katalina wasnt considered her family then that would be that. Her Mother came home about once a week. She had visited last week, and now that it was the beginning of a new one, Katalina expected a visit from her any day now.
Not that she was looking forward to it the slightest bit.
"Ohhhhh, Kaaaaat?" James called in a sing song voice. Katalina looked back at him, still thinking about their Mother.
"James." Something dawned on her then. "You never told me the news you knew I wouldnt like."
James stiffened. Katalina noted grudgingly that her brother seemed to not trust her. Sighing, Katalina looked at the clock and decided to just get dressed and drag her ass to school.
James hadnt moved a muscle. So, Katalina got behind him and pushed him through the door. James finally snapped out of it as she slammed the door in his face.
