"Okay your free to go Bella. Try not to hang round any more walls. " the nurse joked as she opened the door for me. I returned a smile to the nurse.
"thank you" I said leaving through the open door. My dad trailed behind me carrying my floral overnight bag.My legs still felt stiff and numb from all of the drugs the doctors had given me. I tried to put on a smile and walk as normally as I could, despite the pain I was in, reassuring my dad that I was fine. Besides I didn't want to worry him, he wasn't having enough sleep as it was let alone my anxieties eating away at him.
I reached for my keys in the bottom of my bag remembering only later that I couldn't drive, doctors orders.
I hopped into my dad's old, rusty truck that I remembered from my childhood days. This old piece of metal used to make a smile appear at my face. I always wanted to go anywhere and everywhere in this truck, so I could sit in the back watching the stars and the sun overpowering the moon in the morning sky.
"Bella. What was it you wanted to do?" My dad questioned.
"Oh. I can get a friend to take me it's fine," I hesitated slightly.I arrived home, nothing had changed. My floral wallpaper still took over my entire bedroom. Pink silk curtains draped onto my floor. The carpet was the same cream colour, the nail varnish stains still remained in certain places. It was almost as though I had never left.
I sighed, pulling my phone out of my pocket and collapsing into the armchair which sat beside the window, the view of our garden almost like a painting of the countryside: acres of green grass trimmed short and flowers which shrivelled at the cold autumnal weather.
I flicked through my contacts eventually finding Liam.
Hey Liam,
It's Bella. Great news I'm discharged from the hospital. But I can't drive. Could you possibly drive me up to Bath tomorrow. I understand if you say no... It's a big ask.I hesitated before sending the message. We hardly knew each other- this was a big ask. I sent it quickly so that my mind didn't have time to ponder the thought any longer.
Within minutes Liam replied:
Hey Bella,
That's great news! Why are you going to Bath may I ask?I didn't really want him to ask but presumed that he'd find out sooner enough.
To see Finn's parents. They won't mind you staying a few days. After all you were a close friend of Finn's.
Was I making a mistake? What if they didn't want to see me and they only invited me years ago because of Finn?
Oh, I'm sorry something's come up. I would have said yes but I can't. Have a nice trip though. I hope you get the answers you deserve.
Answers I deserve? I didn't mention I was looking for answers. I wasn't even looking for answers.
